Weekend Roundup 3rd & 4th March

Post by Darren N »

8 of us on the Intermediate elite A ride this week. Lots of murkiness and drizzle on the way out, none of it heavy enough to warrant much thought. Tony G was on a short one so exited at Pannal, not before he’d unloaded his weekly repertoire of jokes on me. :) Tullio took over the map-reading duties at this point, and proceeded to lead us on a merry dance around his old stamping ground at Fewston, Swinsty Reservoir and Otley. I’ve never been over that way before and it was very nice indeed. Lots of climbing though, only 600 feet less than the week before around the Howardians and Cockayne Loop, albeit I did climb back up a long hill this week to seek out a puncture victim. Young Dan amused us on a big descent when he wisely hit the ejector button and exited down a private driveway to avoid a nasty turn, we thought he’d pre-arranged lunch with the locals! We stumbled on a great cafe (Cock Pit Farm Tea Rooms) a couple of miles outside of Otley, a nice bonus.

I was very impressed with everyone on the ride, all contributing and helping each other out, some probably did better than they expected – hope it builds some confidence. No cramps for me – hooray! – I overdosed on potassium-laden fruit & veg. I now have some quiet tips from some of the racing guys as well so will continue my anti-cramp quest this week. MVP award this week goes to Tullio, very nimble around the front of the pack all day and lookin’ very strong at the mo.

Felt a bit sorry for the Sunday Clubbers today in the damp, hope they had some fun.

Despite the wet conditions and worse forecast there were 10 riders in The Square for the Sunday bash. Birthday girl Heather, AndyG, IanH, TimR, Stewart, Dave, IanK, Steen, Sean and self. Started OK, the rain wasn't too bad and at least we had a gentle tailwind. Then at Cundal the weather changed in the blink of a eye to stiffish headwind and the temperature dropped about 4 degrees. By Masham, we gave up on Jordan's Moss and took refuge in the steamy cafe. Nobody seamed keen to leave, but eventually we were rattling back through Grewelthorpe, Ripon and Borobridge.

Started with 10, finished with 10 and apart from the odd comfort stop, we kept it together nicely.

Just shy of 80miles at almost 18mph (for the out of cafe section), so I reckon you shouldn't be too hard on us for cutting it short....

Shame though to miss Jordan's today and I though that next week we could head out through Nidderdale and come back over the mountain road...

Good luck with the medics tomorrow Ian, remember to take a picture of Coppi or Moser for them to work from Hope you're back out quickly.

Edit: mention in dispatches for Heather - who won a 5k running race on Sat am, ran up Roseberry Topping in the afternoon, then towed the bunch on Sunday 8) .

Was one of the 8 that headed to Otley on Saturday. We certainly had the better of the weather. As last week passed the training ride on my way to york at Naburn on there way to bishop wood and saw Paul M following behind. I wasn't tempted to turn round and join in though :wink: Felt fairly strong all day despite the early brisk pace. Nice cafe stop just outside Otley as well. And despite been the p******e victim Darren mentions really enjoyed the day. At least the sunshine was out when changing the tube. However you never feel entirely at ease after a flat with only about half the tyre pressure constantly hoping you don't have another.

Sadly won't be out next week due to work but should be back the following week. :)

The Intermediate Elite A(ll-Star) ride this week comprised of moi, Darren, Jon G, Tullio, Karl M, 'young' Dan, Campbell and Tony G. I've been far too busy for the past month, so was desparate to get out for a long ride. Thankfully, I've become considerably less busy as of Friday, so the opportunity beckoned! What a ride it was - the crack was good, the cafe food was tasty, I like the area we rode through and the weather never followed through with its threats, keeping us dry for most of the day.

Well done to the Intermediate All-Star new folk who kept up all the way round and did an admirable job of dropping me near the end (I told you I was a big fat slob :wink: )

My first Intermediate(/Elite/old timers/progressors) ride for a while on Saturday.

Tempted by the prospect of some good hills and my old stomping ground, Darren's tale tells the rest.

Lessons learnt;

1. Never be too hasty to declare a knowledge of the route - lest sacred map lands in your direction.

2. Power of the map lies in its possession;

- if you make a mistake, nobody is any the wiser and if you keep a straight face the rest of the group need never know. (Beckwithshaw has some nice back streets eh boys?)

- if you know some nice detours that aren't part of the sacred map you can use poetic license at will and the others will never know. I knew some off-piste sections through Snowden and Askwith, without which we'd never of found the aforementioned cafe.

Hopefully, disciplinary sanctions by K for the detour aren't too severe?

Good riding by all with some tough hills and strong winds in places but everyone stuck with it.

Good ride on Saturday choosing to go in the middle group of three, following Kevins map out to Stamford Bridge, Full Sutton, Bishop Wilton to Millington and despite the temptation to go to the cafe we looped round to Nunburnholme North Dalton and Huggate before a brisk ride through Millington Pastures back to the welcome cafe break where the others of Kevin's group followed us in, quite a damp day but as always a good ride and good company.

Haven't done both weekend club rides for quite a while but as Rob posted above I did the Sunday ride/swim out to Masham and back which was a contrast to Saturday when the bike and I got really muddy this time the bike kept very clean as we made our way through the flooded roads, again despite the weather a good ride in good company.

Anticipating what I believed to be another lay off from riding due to some medical treatment which I was told would lead to quite a large facial skin graft I was craming in the last minute milage before giving both the weekends bikes a damn good clean and lube as I would not be out on them for a while.

But to my delight it all went so well I did not need the expected extent of the work and resulted in a much smaller skin graft which means I should be back on the bike a lot sooner yipee ! :D

Have a swift recovery, Ian! You need to get back out riding so you can wow us with your stunning looks and even more stunning bike skillz.

I'm guessing that the place where your bit of skin got grafted feels fine, while your donor site is stinging like heck. Oui?

We're pleased all went well Ian and that the graft not as large as expected. Your attitude is an inspiration to us all. Hope for a speedy return to the pedals for you.

We followed same route as Ian describes above, on the K Groupies B ride. Great route! K is coming up with some creative route choices to our favourite destinations.

Lisa, Hannah and Kevin turned left off Nurnburnholme hill to head towards the cafe and we took in the big climb to the top and the extra loop via N Dalton & Huggate. Along Millington Pastures, it was Dawn's turn for a puncture and so we split agian, with Bernard, Julia and Elaine heading on to stagger us all in the cafe, whilst Steve heroically replaced the tube! Then Dave I'A, Neil, Steve, Dawn & self brought up the rear to find the group had eaten Millington cafe out of eggs! This made for bigger calamity than all the punctures in my book, but Dawn took pity on me and selflessly swapped to BoT.

Thanks for a great ride & company
