27th May Sunday Club Ride- updated.

Post by Karl M »

Thought we could meet at the Hole of Horcum car park at 10:00am for a 10:15 depart, for both the Steady and Fast groups.
Please bring £2 for the car parking- the money goes to maintaining the NYM after we’ve eroded it.

Steve W has an improved route for the Steady group, posted below (it’s very scenic).

The Fast group will ride a loop through Cropton Forest for 2 hours, before taking a breather for lunch at the Horseshoe Inn.
Next, a 2.5 hours loop that includes a section of Dalby Forest’s red route, with novel bits.

And to really get your appetite going, here is the pub’s menu (scroll down for sandwiches)… or just bring your own lunch and have a tea or coffee.

Post below to arrange lifts or have any queries.
See you there.
:D

Some details.
It takes roughly an hour to drive from York to the car park, but bear in mind there could be traffic delays on the A64 as people flock to the coast.
Hardtail will be fine. It’s hilly so you’ll need a granny ring.
There’ll be virtually no boggy bits.
Cropton forest is like Dalby was a decade ago- thin red and blue grade trails, joined up by sections of fireroad.
If you’re preparing for a certain 24hr event coming up, the route is ideal to try riding with the fast/ ‘brisk’ group if you haven’t done so before, because you can bail out after lunch if you'd prefer.

Steady Group Route

Post by SteveW »

Hi all,

The steady group will meet with the fast group at Hole of Horcum for 10:00am for a 10:15am start also.

We will head NE from the car park, along Saltergate Brow, past the military base (best not go through it !), into Langdale Forest, and working back along forest roads around Blakey Topping, through the farm at Newgate Foot, up the edge of the escarpment and back to the Hole of Horcum. Then we'll cross the A169, and take the bridleway across Levisham Moor. Depending on time, we can head straight to the lunch stop at the Horseshoe Inn, or drop down into the valley before working back up to Levisham village. The morning section will be about 2 - 2.5 hours with almost no tarmac.

Either bring your own lunch or buy at the Horseshoe Inn (see details posted by Karl) - it's up to you !

The afternoon will take either a fairly direct route back to the car park on a bridleway (30 mins), or if you want some more riding, then along bridleways and small roads into Dalby Forest for some red trail sections, before heading back to the cars (1.5 - 2 hrs approx).

The steady group ride is suitable for all, with straighforward trails, great views, and some good variety. Any tricky sections are short and walkable (and on the flat), and the hills are short and walkable if required.

The weather should be fantastic - hope to see you there !
