Buying advise - GPS

Post by jayw »

Hi all me & Sas are dragging ourselves into the 21st century & are looking at getting a MTB gps, as were getting fed-up of not being able to remember routes that other people have led & so we dont get lost when biking abroad on out Honeymoon next year  So please give us some advise.

I have just been reading about these in Mountain Bike UK mag, they tested the Garmin Edge 800 looks to be the daddy pricing about £350ish, the others that surgest is the Satmap Active 10 Bike about £350 again and Bryton Rider 50 GPS about £190. Other than what I have read in MBUK I dont know anymore.

What I do know is Garmin is ahead of most other GPS companies when it comes to aircraft a lot of people swear by them!

Agreed... Garmin wins hands down!
I've got the 62e but only because it takes AA batteries so can be used for multi-day stuff... Otherwise would have gone for the 800!

I have a Garmin 605, if I was buying again I would go for the 800.

However, whilst it may be the best, don't expect it to be userfriendly, unless you have 'Geek' inbetween your names and/or 'Doctor' before them!

Good job I have clever friends who showed me how it worked.

A vote against the Satmap. Great in theory and being demo'ed in the shop. However, it's based on Windows - need I say more. Constant crashes, inexplicable lock ups, nightmare menu structure and it went through batteries v fast. Gill got one and gave up on it so it went back. She now belongs to the Church of Garmin.
