Polaris Challenge 25&26 June : 2 day orienteering

Post by Lilly »

Its 2 days orienteering, pairs or solo in the Peak District - with a campsite, pasta party and band on the middle (Saturday) night. In theory this is the fun one, the Autumn one is the toughie.

I want to do it in a pair - anyone up for it (ideally who can map read better than me!)...

It's £60 solo, or £60pp in a pair and includes camping & facilities Friday and Saturday / band&pasta party Saturday night.

See below for the published info:

The Polaris Challenge began in Autumn 1991 as the very first two-day Mountain Biking Orienteering event in the world. It is still the biggest event of its kind and regularly attracts riders from all over the world, year
after year. It is a two-day event, combining mountain biking with navigation and bike touring skills. Teams of two (or solo) ride to locate checkpoints scattered over a large area of rugged countryside. Each checkpoint has a value and the aim of the challenge is to accumulate as many points as possible within each day's time limit - like an Orienteering ‘Score’ Event. Distance and 'difficult to access' checkpoints carry higher values and there are tough penalties for exceeding the time limits. Riders return to the Event HQ pasta and a good nights rest before attempting the second shorter day with different routes available.
NEW 2011 - Off Road ‘Sportive’ or MTB Enduro course. There are two ‘Marked’ fixed courses available this year - an Elite (Expected completion time 5-7 hours) and Short Course - Expected Finish time 3-5 hours.
The provided map and some map reading experience are needed, but no map navigation skills. Both routes are open both days, you can ride 'The Double' or 'The Mix' - an Elite and a short, or just opt for the single
on either day - you can decide when you register at the weekend - more details at www.theomm.com

Who takes the Challenge? 'Anyone who loves mountain biking.' You can take it seriously and go for maximum scores or treat it as a good excuse for a weekend of adventurous riding through some wild country
on trails and tracks! FULL DETAILS, RULES, OTHER EVENTS ETC... GOT TO www.theomm.com
