Winter Solstice Tan Hill, 22nd Dec

Post by Rob »

A long ride on the shortest Sunday of the year.
230km in three sections. A flat 80km to Leyburn for breakfast. A mountainous 70km loop of Buttertubs, Tan Hill and Grinton Moor, back to Leyburn for a late lunch. Then 80km back down the Vale of York in the dark.
It's not "Tan Hill or bust" - we've cancelled due to the weather a couple of times over the years, and cut it slightly short a couple of times too. But we've gone round the full course 14 times now.
7am start
7pm finish
You've a month to get ready.

OK, here it is. This Sunday.....
As a nice coincidence, due to a wobble in our orbit of the sun, the 22nd is actually the shortest day this year...
7am start.
Leyburn by 10am
Back in Leyburn about 3pm
Home at about 7pm.

The (very) long range weather forecast looks OK. Expect the ride to be *on*. I'll post here on Saturday afternoon if it isn't, not before.

Bring 2 tubes, a few more carbs than normal, a bit of extra cash, decent lights, back-up lights, decent cape and dress slightly warmer than you would normally, as, with the best will in the world, we won't be riding quite as hard as usual!

Well done to the Solstice 6 (Ed, Joe, Andy, Dan, Paul...)
Big day out, great adventure, cold, wet start, then clear benign conditions for the big circuit.
We reckon that was the 15th time around the route in December.
Pencil it in for next year....
