Weekend Round up 4/5 April 2015

Post by dave c »

On Sat did 1st bit of A ride. Don't know where they were going as someone changed the route. On Sunday did the Ilkley cc 25 tt on the Boroughbridge Walshford course, warm morning and some good Clifton performances from Mike Schofield, Duncan Sleigh and Peter Hook. I had a good steady run, no pb but ok.

Cheers

Grey sky at 08:45 on Saturday, even a bit of drizzle in the air. Four of us for the ride to Masham: Gerard, Pete, Paul and self.

We set a good pace out to Masham via Tollerton and Melmerby with long turns at the front as we were a small group - not sure how I managed to be on the front for most of the way to Masham. Lovely climb up to Warthermarske before shooting down to Grewelthorpe. Pete and Gerard then did the honours at the front from Ripon back to York via Grafton and Benningbrough Hall.

Probably one of the most enjoyable rides this year, quiet roads, good company and not too much wind. We were back in York at 13:00; however, my tubeless tyre refused to re-seal after a puncture on Bootham - so near, yet so far.... After creating a scene that was reminiscent of Lance Henriksen's demise at the end of Aliens (if you have had tubeless sealant go everywhere you know what I am talking about) and the insertion of a spare inner tube, we all made it back to the Square with big smiles and very weary legs.

Too many cyclists to namecheck individually, but 13 joined the “K” Group on Saturday for a ride to Sledmere House. Weather was a bit warmer than previous weekends and I managed to get away with fewer layers and fingerless gloves. The “A” Group had decided to head North instead of to Driffield and so we picked up Nick at the junction after Stockton on the Forest.

The group was probably a bit on the large side for a social ride and Kevin made the sensible decision to split us into two groups of 7 before we reached Settrington - with PeteS, Arnie, JohnC, Tony, Nick, Rich and myself being sent on ahead, up Settrington Bank, through West Lutton and onto Sledmere.

The terrace cafe at Sledmere House was extremely busy and so we decided to push on through Wetwang and Huggate and have our cafe stop at Millington instead. They still had the log fire going inside and it was a real struggle to get the legs going again when we emerged into the cool air after lunch.

Standard route back via Stamford Bridge and Stockton Lane, with Rich and Tony kindly pointing out that my rear wheel was looking decidedly wonky. Managed to get home safely though, with 70 miles on the Garmin.
