Did the last open tt at Burton Fleming on Saturday.
Four other Cliftonites competed, Duncan S, Michael S, Pete H and the notable ride by Cavan Walker who won the junior section and also beat the course record, great achievement.
Good 10 mile course on a windy day. Did a reasonable time and pb.
I hope the Tan Hillers had a good day.
Cheers
Dave

Tan Hill Notes.
Near perfect conditions with light westerly winds, warm and breathtakingly clear. You'll spot those that rode on Sunday by the dead flies on their teeth
Good to have a few racing snakes along. They appeared happy to ride Sunday pace as long as we gave them their head on the big climbs.
Chapeau to Dr Joe who was forced to ride his own tempo after Leyburn. 100 solo miles finishing not that far behind the rest of us.
A cornucopia (great word eh?) of mechanical issues. Tom's busted spoke necessitated an early return. A few punctures, but Andrew's seized freehub caused the most banter. This seizure caused his chain to fall off every time he freewheeled. The option to stop pedaling occasionally (ie every 30s) is highly rated after 140 miles!
Despite all this, it was a surprisingly swift ride. Some very happy, but fatigued riders at the end.
Well done to the 13 finishers.
Next week - The Fleak. Last big one for a while.

Re: Weekend r/u 30-31/08/14
My first Tan Hill ride and the furthest I've ever cycled in one day. Near-perfect weather conditions and great to participate in a Sunday Club-run at long last.
Was slightly apprehensive on arriving at The Square but there were enough "weel-kent" faces to ease the nerves. Kevin had kindly forewarned Rob that a couple of his Saturday irregulars may show up and I was feeling reasonably comfortable by the time we reached the first cafe stop at Leyburn.
That's when the hard part began and although the three climbs were pretty tough, even in benign conditions, the stunning views and long descents made the struggle worthwhile.
Round 2 at the Leyburn cafe saw me attempt to integrate myself further into Sunday Club-run culture by ordering an enormous piece of sticky toffee pudding. It took almost as much effort to finish that off as it did to haul myself up and onto Grinton Moor.
I expected the 50 or so miles back to York to be a bit of a slog. But I hadn't reckoned for Andrew's mechanical failure and the unfolding drama as the Cliftonite Players re-enacted a scene somewhere between Speed and the Father Ted "Milk Float" episode as we tried to get a cyclist back to York without stopping for traffic or dropping below 18mph. Sadly, Sandra Bullock was nowhere to be seen.
All in all, a grand day out and a big thank you to all the Sunday riders.
Oh, and one last mention for Kevin. Coz if you'd told me a couple of years back that I'd be able to cycle 145 miles in one day I'd have laughed as much as I did when Andrew cycled round in ever decreasing circles prior to perfectly timing his assault on the changing traffic lights.

Well done to the Tan Hill’ers.
The “A” ride on Saturday consisted of: Rich, Graeme T, Kevin N, Simon, Dr.Dave, newcomer Kevin, Fin, Jon G and Stu.
Dr.Dave gave us a great route. First we went over the Howardian Hills as a warm up, before a steady climb from Pickering onto the Moors tops. There we pootled at 12 mph along a gravel firetrack road through the beautiful Cropton forest.
We descended to Levisham railway station and waited at the crossing whilst a steam train from a bygone era thought about moving off. Then we crawled up to Lockton and flew into Thornton-le-Dale for a pit stop.
From Malton we took the fast ‘almost a B-road’ to Buttercrambe, with some riders making the most of their remaining summer fitness by breaking away from the pack.
At Bossall through to York we remained a compact group, tired but happy after our day’s adventure.
84 miles in typical good company.

On Saturday 27th September, some of us are cycling this event and you’re welcome to join us:

By parking at Thirsk racecourse, you can go deep into the Dales without too much effort and enjoy some of the TdF route in a sportive atmosphere.
A 101 mile ride (or 77 mile version) as a final reminder of this special Tour year.

Re: Weekend r/u 30-31/08/14
Many thanks Tan Hill riders for your patience over the last 40 miles. Especially to Rob who did time trial style pusher off duties to get me going each time the chain fell off. Though after a bit of practice I did manage to "clean it" from Topcliffe through to the lights at the Theatre Royal. After all that constant pedalling (and riding with the brakes on!), don't think I'll be taking up fixed this winter!
