Weekend Roundup, 19th/20th

Post by Rob »

Some fantatstic weekend racing results posted on the other forum, well done chaps and chapess!

Runswick Bay challenge ride for me on Sunday. 6 in The Square, with DaveB turning back at Rosedale that left TonyG, DarrenN, Mal, Dan the younger and self. As we headed N it got gradually colder and windier. Some bonkers climbing over the Moors. RB is a nice spot, but it was a bit cold and lifeless in the cafe and we were off again in less than 30 mins. Had forgotten how hard the climb up from the beach is - you know it's steep when your arms go wobbly! Kept it moving well on the way back and returned much earlier than I expected. Mileage a little shy of that advertised, but am sure you'll forgive me - the climbing made up for it.

Well done to Mal who has now ridden all the Challenge Rides this year. Hope the gammy leg is OK today...?

Back to a normal/sensible clubrun on Sunday. 8)

Well done to our racers, great results good to see the Clifton CC name appear there.

No ride for me this weekend, have a bit of a chest infection and a bit of a bad back after a bit of gardening, (I knew I hate gardening for some reason).

Well done to all the racers :)

I rode to Glasgow over Friday night. Possible motivations were:

1) I am curiously attracted to having my hands frozen off while descending the Pennines at 5am in the rain.
2) I'd got bored of haring round at top speed and reverted to my default setting of long distance plodding.
3) I was introducing a friend to the dark arts of audax.
4) I wanted to get one up on the Runswick Bay riders.

Whatever the reason, I arrived at Glasgow Central with one fewer inner tube than when I started, one more bottle of whisky in the saddlebag, 8 minutes to spare before the train left (red lights may have been jumped in the catching of this train :( ) and one fewer railcards than I was meant to have. Thankfully the conductor didn't check that last part!

Well done to both the racers & the Runswick bay riders, my solo ride took me out on Sunday to Thornton le dale via Thornton le clay, Whitwell, Kirkham, Memethorpe, Norton, Rillington and then the back roads from Yedingham, return via Amotherby etc.
Past by Claire & Kath leavin York in what I presumed ws the support car for the bay ride, Kath shouting encouragement I think!
Then I saw Mac as I left the cafe, followed by Dave Cook in Flaxton on the return, during which I enjoyed the benefit of the tail wind after riding into it all the way out.
77 miles on the clock & 5 hours riding which I was very happy with after some shorter rides over the previous weekends.

Some sensational results by the guys & gals at the Div Champs on Sunday, well done indeed, particularly Muzzy and Heather who made it up onto the step!

I’d like to think the Saturday Intermediate and Sunday Club rides could take a bit of reflected glory from the weekend’s results with a couple of the names on the list having learnt ‘everything they know’ on club runs. ;) For those out there thinking of having a go at the racing scene, humming along in a tight bunch on a big club ride is a great way to learn some basic skills, not to mention toughening up those pins!

Of course, at the other end of the scale, club runs are also an option for those approaching retirement from racing…and just when we thought Muzzy was preparing to be put out to pasture, he turns in a big result!…looks like we’ll have to find another use for that back paddock we had lined up for him!

While all the action was happening at Sheriff Hutton, it seems odd now that a small group of us were battling across the top of the Moors at the same time. For every mile we headed northward, the temperature dropped another degree. Despite battling the headwinds on the way out, we seemed to make reasonable time. Two years ago on this ride, I was told Runswick Bay was bathed in sunshine and the crystal blue sea resembled the Med. This year we joked that it was more like the Baltic!…I half expected a Russian sub to surface out of the blackness off the beach!

This ride was a bit like a boxing match – every time you thought you were settled, you’d be king hit by another big climb to put you back on the canvas. I was punch drunk by the end. Young Dan was suitably spritely on these climbs and Mal enjoyed himself by abusing us for needing to stop on the summits! Rob and Tony were impressively strong all day and motored us on the breeze all the way back to York from Pickering. I was reduced to playing fridge magnet on their wheels. Near Flaxton, some strange brightness emerged overhead and I almost fell off my bike with shock when a shadow appeared on the road next to me.

Another huge day on the bike and legs feeling mangled today. Thanks to my fellow Runswick Bay-ers for a great day. None of this, of course, measures up to the exploits of our fellow clubbers on the racetrack around Sherrif – sensational results, a big well done to everyone who put themselves on the line!
