Weekend Roundup 28/29th April

Post by Rob »

Just 3 in The Square this morning, already cold and wet. Thought that the plan to ride Park Rash was exactly that - rash... So, headed N in the knowledge that if the weather deteriorated further then we'd have a tailwind spin back. Bernie turned back at Crayke which left me and Steen to record one on my slowest average speeds ever to Helmesley. Very quick coffee, then a more rapid ride back to York, less than 60 miles, but bragging points for getting out I reckon.

How about we do a "Dash for the Rash" Sunday clubrun when spring returns - hopefully before 2013?

Have to say i was thinking of the gang racing at Wetwang. I used to hate warming up in the rain, but relished the racing once the flag dropped. Must have been pretty epic up there today, sort of race where your teeth get worn down by the grit in your mouth. Chapeau if you competed.

My BUCS holiday didn't prove very sunny. March winds and April showers joined forces with Greg's legs to deny me the hour - I came home in 1.02.49 and though I had to dash for a train so only got a quick glance at the board, I think that was one of the better times. 'one of' is the operative word here: the winner did 53.something but I've been hearing rumours about a disqualification! We'll see. In the meantime, my holiday continues with Roses next weekend, which is the annual battle re-enactment posing as a sporting contest with Lancaster Uni.

Did anyone survive Wetwang?

After a cold since Tuesday I felt my self going down hill after Huby so decided after teh climb at Crake to head back via Easingwold.
The weather got worse the nearer I got to York, but at least I had a tail wind, the flooded roads through York left me with very wet feet despite having over shoes on that have kept me toasted all winter!!

Cycled back from Sheffield to York on Friday afternoon, slightly apprehensive about what the weather would do. Fortunately it turned out to be quite a nice afternoon, with only a little bit of drizzle in the first hour or two, and then the second and third hours remained dry. When I got to Beal I had to test out my human compass due to an enormous amount of water in the canal which had come across the road, a few feet deep. Thanks to a local bystander I took a slight detour via the A19 and was soon back on track towards Thorpe Willoughby, Cawood and then on to York.

Saturday morning I headed out at 9am on the training ride with the aim of beating the inevitable showers and the hope of getting some revision done in the afternoon. Was a good ride, but really struggled in the flat roads back towards Bishopwood and Cawood due to the strong winds.

Unfortunately I lacked the motivation of the others posting on this page and decided not to venture out this morning, choosing instead to clean my mucky bike. So can't really complain with two 70ish milers, first one rattled off at 17.8mph average and the second at 19.3mph average. Hats off to all those brave enough to head out today, and well done to everyone who raced this weekend! Cheers

'A' group for me on Sat to Rosedale. Slowly working my way back to fitness but still struggled this week. The stiff headwind on the way out made the drag up Blakey ridge a thigh-burner. Nice break in the cafe in Rosedale (re-opened under new management?) but after this was going like a bag of spanners every time the gradient exceeded 5%. Hearty thanks to all who soft-pedalled most of the way back to enable me to cling on. Did seem to find a rhythm of sorts for the last 20 miles or so - largely as it was flatter then I think.

For some reason of late my quads start burning long before the heart rate and breathing get remotely difficult - not usually a problem for me. Must be getting old!

The A ride for me too on Saturday but a rather frantic start as I had to go home and swap bikes before we even started from the square due to a mechanical.

A strong head wind out via Haxby to Strensall and onto Castle Howard with the weather gradually getting worse. A regroup in Slingsby saw the roads get wetter and me getting colder due to not wearing the right clothing. Thanks BBC weather and Saying it was going to be dry!

At Kirbymoorside I was cold enough and didn't fancy heading onto the Moors so turned for Helmsley and home. In all a 60 mile ride and a nice tailwind back from Helmsley. Pocklington Challenge on Saturday, looking forward to this one.

I chickened out of the Sunday club ride, and fortunately had the opportunity to go out today, completely different weather to yesterday, sunny, warm, low wind, went on the Dalby run, out via Castle Howard, Amotherby, Thornton le Dale. The road from Dalby village had a road closed sign, resurfacing but they let me through and then onto Langdale End, Snainton, Yedingham, Settrington, Langton and back home, 80 miles, just what I needed as I have not been getting many miles in so hope to be ok for the Pocklington Pedal this Saturday.

Just seen Steen in Wass and he told me all bout Sunday. Believe it or not I did go out very early to avoid the weather coming up from the South. Went from Wass - Helmsley - Chop Gate - Osmotherley - Hawnby - White Horse Bank - home. Nearly got away with it but for the last hour - awful wind and rain, so I was with you guys in spirit!

See you in a few weeks as not able to play in the Pocklington / Wiggington due to work, but will be out after that.

Enjoy!

Mark

PS - still no Rourke!

Wetwang for me. The worst combination of conditions I've attempted to race in in 25 years - 4 deg, wet & windy. Warm up for me consisted of watching a recording of the previous days stage of the Tour of Turkey stage which looked nice & warm, whilst waiting for Cam to pick me up. Always a great race - just for the body count and I was particularly impressed with the Bulgarian 3rd cat who won the overall - but If you thought Brad winning Romandy was exciting - it had nothing on this and if you missed it here it is:

After that I was too exhausted to really race myself so final preparation consisted of just sitting in the car with the heater on drinking coffee. Needless to say my race went the way of two thirds of the field and I was in the shower after 2 laps. Some bad wardrobe decisions led to my downfall - I was wearing as much as I was doing club runs in in December and just turned into the human sponge!
I'll try and eradicate this from the memory banks and move on - as far as I'm concerned my season hasn't started yet - I'm still waiting for winter to end! If I don't count the years I haven't finished I still haven't finished outside the top ten with four top 5 finishes in this race. But looking back I've always had a race or something the previous week so I'm not too disappointed this year - looking at the top 10 - there is a lot of experience in there from guys with a lot more racing in their legs this year. Well done to Darren & Cam for sticking in there and well done to all the Clifton riders as I believe everyone put themselves on the start line.

A late start on Saturday, due to some minor post-Spiro repairs being needed.

Decided to head North into the headwind and try out a TT circuit from Sheriff Hutton. Despite strong winds, some flooding and heavy rain I thought I didn't do too badly. Until I came home and compared my time to the 2009 results. Some work to do there I think.

Looking forward to Pock at the weekend. If anyone wants a low-tech route planning solution, I've posted an A4 route map on the facebook site.

It seems the BUCS ride was a bit controversial! I missed all the fun - I'd had to dash to get a train.
