Weekend Roundup. 10/11th Dec

Post by Rob »

Memorable Sunday Clubrun. Just 5 of us (Cooky, Muzzy, AndyG, Richard and self) set off in good December conditions. Castle Howard, Thornton-le Dale. The rain started at Low Dalby and soon became heavy and cold. Loads of runners at Langdale End just finishing a x-country race in vests and shorts (whatever you do in sport, there's always someone more bonkers). Tricky descent into Scarboro through the stinging rain. Along Marine Drive - loads of surfers (more bonkers still).

Rocked up at the Golden Grid rather damp, but warm inside. Full Xmas dinner and Richard had brought crackers! Could have done with a hip flask of whiskey as well (note to self for next year....)

Still raining when we left and 4 punctures in 15 miles put us a little behind schedule. Still, Richard chose a scenic spot for the last one and the rain had stopped by then. Onwards into the dark across the Wolds. Some good team riding and some long pulls on the front by all.

Back just after 5-30 with 105 miles on the clock. Legs buzzing - that was some ride!

Tan Hill next Sunday. 7-30 start.

I didn't do any decent riding, but I did buy a bike trailer from Flying Finn. I also made a shocking discovery: he isn't Finnish - he's actually German and moved to Finland to join his wife! I'm not sure I can cope with the shock of this revelation, it seems that the 'Flying German' has fooled us all

Thanks for the trailer Pavle!

Sunday Club Run for me. Was certainly an adventure and possibly one to be enjoyed more as a memory than at the actual time. The crackers were in a plastic bag to prevent a damp squib due to my sweat, but also needed to survive being soaked for the best part of an hour before lunch. Not sure I was thoroughly warm as we left Scarborough in the pouring rain.

Very chilly start on the return leg, a breezy westerly wind and the light fading fast with 3+ hours to complete. With 4 punctures we were running low on tubes and facing the prospect of a long walk back over the Wolds. Conversation inevitably drifted to Captain Scott and Oates, rationing food, warming hands via a 'nature break,' and, as bidons ran low, when we would reach the urine drinking stage. Fortunately no more mishaps and made it back to York completely drained with the prospect of doing an extra 2 hours and 40 additional miles next week. In the immortal words of another Scott, 'I'm givin' her all she's got Captain! If I push it any harder the whole thing will blow!'.

I was waiting for the weekend-roundabout, especially from sunday and I am speechless, such a long ride at such conditions... They must be british!
And when I hear that you will do next sunday the Tan Hill Tour, guess what are my legs doing: they are getting nervous and want also. I haven´t been there! Instead I will be sitting for hours and hours in a car driving home...
And yes, I am german! Tried to hide it, but Greg made it publish now;)
And it is not a secret that I enjoyed my stay at York VERY VERY MUCH!
And why?
Because Bernard made it possible, giving me his bike! I made my first and my last ride with Bernard. We went out the eastern side to Tadcaster. 3 hours of riding, half of it dry, the other one in rain. I was looking for a warm sauna, but there wasn´t any, instead i took a warm bath.
Thank you PhilBixy for the CC clothing I could buy, to bad that I dind´t get out for a ride with you, but when you come to Finland I will take you out! I hope your better half is OK, greetings to her.
Greg, nice to meet you also, a PBP finisher! And one day, when you have kids, the trailer will give your oportunities to do your training.
I have made here 1700km in almost 12 weeks, and it is much much more than expected (about 1200km only bike and 500km with trailer!).
My next ride is on 4.1.12. and here is a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DRk09BZ2nU
One round is 1040meters with 16m of ascending. It is not a race, the goal is to drive 300km, so I got some good hill training here and I will miss York and the good organized Clifton CC!

If somebody is looking to come to Finnland and need some informations, mail me, a friend of mine is also from the UK, so we will help you!
Greetings from the flying Finn/German ;) and I will allways have the Clifton CC in good memories!
Cheers!

Farewell Parvle glad you have enjoyed your time with Clifton, I've enjoyed reading your posts while you have been here.

Like the video, looks a great place to ride when the roads are icy etc.

All the best to you.

As mentioned I was another taker for Sundays extreme Christmas dinner!
I'm not sure what happened but the forecast I was looking at on Saturday looked nothing like the real thing! It was a real proper winter drenching and luckily the heating was turned up well in the cafe! I dont know what they must have made of us when we came dripping in?
Back to Tim's question - my personal answer is no - I dont recall ever been in quite that sort of predicament although in years gone by I did make it home in some right states - I mean 20 years ago a December ride to Scarborough was just like any other week! I can only actually recall having to phone home for a lift a couple of times due to mechanical failures.
But as I was saying on Sunday I would only be doing this on a bike that's fit for the purpose, in clothing fit for the purpose, carrying/wearing a Goretex I could practically live in, loads of food, spare tubes, spare tyre etc. I dont give a monkeys how much it all weighs its only a social ride and good mental training. And that was the great thing about Sunday - it would have been a hard enough ride without the rain and we had four stops in quick succession. But everyone was in good spirits and did some big turns. It makes the difference!

And best wishes to Parvle - the best Finnish/German cyclist I've ever ridden behind!

I felt for you hard cases on the sunday ride. I had a little pootle around Dalby after (very excitedly) waving you all through, and the weather sucked! However the worse the weather the better the tea and cakes.

The forecast for last sunday was: some rain early in the day possible, then clearing out!
The reality last sunday was: a dry morning, then coming rain until evening, clearing out after sunset...
Anyway, I have learned here a lot of things! And they have to be expierienced! It would be tooo long to list them all.
I am impressed by your "addiction" for riding, shine or rain!
When I read the announcment about the Tan Hill, I was digging in my maps and making a route to do it, but the weather was already too bad (for me, not for you!!!).
I just gave my bike back to the original owner and Bernard gave me a bunch of maps and: CLIFTONITE Autumn/Winter 2011
And there is a article about The (nearly) Tan Hill Solstice Ride wich I am awaiting to read!!!
I realized that I am leaving about 2 weeks to early because I also cannot take part at your christmas dinner! I have to plan next time better! ;)
So, I am waiting already for the Tan Hill report and I am honoured to hear such a comment from you Paul, even though I don´t know why... hehe Maybe because of the slipstream?! hehe
You are in my eyes a bonker! But a positive one ;)
Thanks guys and take care!

"I had a little pootle around Dalby after (very excitedly) waving you all through, and the weather sucked!"

Funny thing was Chris, Cath had taken Peter for a walk in Dalby that morning and about 10 seconds before seeing you I'd seen our car in the car park! If I'd known I wouldnt be walking in through our front door until 6pm I might have been tempted. Then again it was still a good ride.........

"The forecast for last sunday was: some rain early in the day possible, then clearing out!"

Yes that was the forecast I was looking at. I blame the BBC!

"Maybe because of the slipstream?"

Yes, me being 5'6" rather than 6'6"

"You are in my eyes a bonker! But a positive one"

I've been called somethings before but a positive bonker is by far the best. And this from someone riding 300km - indoors!
Best wishes and let us know how you get on?
