Just 3 in The Square for the Sunday ride..... where were you all?
Muzzy recovering from bubonic plague, so only out for an hour. Left just self and TonyG to tackle the classic Langdale End ride. Beautiful conditions in the morning and we hummed along gently through Troutsdale and Dalby. Loads of bikies out. Cafe in Thornton-le-dale with 60 miles done. In and out in 30mins as skies darkening in the SW. Got as far as Castle Howard before the rain started, but only light stuff really. Home with 90m on clock and drinking tea before 3pm before the real rain started. Great ride, thanks for the company Tony.
Bolton Abbey next week. Spurn Head the weekend after (8am start Broomy?)

I joined the intermediate ride this week for a nice ride over to Otley in the sun. The weather was great all the way round with the exception of some hail, which stung us for only about 5 mins near Tockwith on the way out. Great ride with lots of nice hills; I had 90miles door to door on the clock after a few extra miles afterwards.
Sounds like a good ride Rob, wish I'd come along too!

Cleveland Wheelers 50 mile tt for me this morning starting at Crathorne heading south on the A19 down to the Dishforth interchange and then back again.
I was first rider off at 8:02 so a fairly early start from home was planned on what proved to be a beautiful morning for time trialling.
I really must be better organised for these events as for some reason or another I struggled finding the hq and made it to the start with only 20 seconds to spare and no warm up to speak of!
Anyway the ride went pretty well and I am now certainly a convert to caffeine gels as they seemed to work like magic on todays longer event.
Ended up pretty pleased with my time of 2:07:29 and am left feeling that I would be fortunate to experience the same conditions again very often (good job it wasn't this afternoon)
More good news was to follow as due to some handicap system that I do not pretend to understand I was informed that I had got 2nd handicap and had won £20!
Definately a day to remember!!

I’m enjoying a nice little break from the tarmac. Joined the MTB club run today out of Castle Bolton, nr Leyburn. The group were doing a reccie of a 4 day expedition race in August, so we spent 6 hours climbing some of the steepest trails in the Dales, turned out to be quite a workout! Found a café for a 20 minute coffee break, then it was straight back to the action.
Deborah led us magnificently - felt very sorry for her on the big hilltops trying to consult a tricky map in grim weather. I also appreciated Deb’s mentoring – my new mantra on descents: “pedals flat, heels down!”
Everyone remained good-humoured, despite the rain. It was an epic day and an epic ride. Huge thanks to Deborah for leading us so well and for the sensational company of the guys, had some very funny moments.
I’ve entered a race next week, then it’s back for Broomo’s Spurn-fest the week after – I also like the idea of an early start.

I went down to Harworth for the Donny Wheelers road race along with Tim, Cam, Dave. Dave C, Andy and Keith from the VC York were also there doing the even older mens race.
The race had bunch sprint written all over it from about lap 2 and I found it frustrating at times, 60 riders but only a few wanted to race. It really needed a crosswind whipping across on the exposed parts of the course to split it up, It was a day when the sprinters could just sit on and have an armchair ride to the finish. Tim and Cam were quite active at the front and had a few digs. I had a go in the sprint finish, got up there and came away with £25 for my efforts but still no win.

Did the LVRC Donny wheelers as Darren details above.
I was in EFG with Keith. 1st lap followed an attack which didn't stick, then another, 3rd attack stayed in the group and that one got away, 3 riders. Keith and I worked at the front plus another guy but not enough to close the gap, so it ended up with the group waiting for a sprint for 4th, Keith got it with me 6th.
Enjoyable race on a good fast course and good to have a plenty of Clifton presence.
Same hq this week, different course for Tom Simpson mem. massive entry.

Another Donny Wheelers LVRC report. As Darren has posted, the 40yr to 50yr old race was a strange affair. It was only my 2nd ever race so I don't have much to compare it to but the whole bunch pretty much rode round together for the entire race (av 25.1 mph) and it ended as a bunch sprint.
Following my last race where I went too deep and blew up, this time I was conservative and loitered in the middle to rear of the bunch expecting things to kick off at some point but it never happened! On the last lap I moved up a bit and consequently finished in the middle of the bunch. TBH I've done harder Sat training rides - I can't help thinking that this race was atypical and that my mid-bunch finish flatters me somewhat, but then again I didn't try and make a break so I wasn't exactly 'racing', it was more a case of trailing round with everybody else. We'll see next time....
