Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

I headed out en mtb on the Sunday Clubrun with Heather leading the way and Nigel riding shotgun. Nice mix of "singletrack", Landrover tracks and white-over back lanes. One or two "chutes", although we claimed to be just making snow-angels  . Just past High Sittenham the snow got a bit too deep - passable, but rather hard work. The view back towards York from up there was truly memorable.

I needed to be back for midday so left the others near Ganthorpe to come back through the lanes, Barton-le-Willows and Bossall. All the lanes were either totally clear or totally white-over.

Thanks to my comrades for taking me round - made a great change.

I had planned to do the mtb ride today but an hours practice on Saturday morning made me rethink. Perhaps I need to wait til the weather improves before trying again. However it was enough to make me think the main roads were perfectly clear and as I'd had an otherwise totally sedentary week decided a road ride was in order. I pretty much retraced the route I'd ridden with Rob the previous Sunday - the difference this time being the roads were well gritted and totally snow and ice free, I had running water all the way round and still had contact with my feet when I returned home. Roads were relatively traffic free. Like last week - main road to Stamford Br, Buttercrambe, Malton. However at Hovingham I turned left up the hill - passing Nigel and Heather coming down. I was worried what they'd done with Rob as I'd seen him pass the end of our road a couple of hours earlier so knew he should have been with them! Plenty of cars at the top of Terrington Bank for the sledgers. After Sheriff I turned right and picked up the 10 course as far as the Strensal turn and then back up the B road. 50 miles in 3 hrs so no records broken but a great clear day. Wouldnt have wanted a big group ride this weekend as you can never really know what to expect when the weathers like this. That said there were no short cut options - all the minor roads looked impassable on skinny tyres! Just good to be out and 20 x better than turboing!
