Weeken round-up, 17th-18th
Four of us set off from the square on the H ride, Howard, Andy, Ian and myself.
A wonderful day for riding unfortunately I wasn't feeling quite the same after the first couple of climbs it was clear there was even less in the legs than usual but still enjoyed the run to Filey. With the wind behind us on the way out we made good time to the cafe stop. After a good lunch it was time to face the music and the wind on the return leg which thanks to the efforts on the front by Andy, Howard and Ian giving me a tow back wasn't quite as bad as I feared.
Still another 100 miles on the clock and with a bit of a rest next week will feel easier as well. Hope the rest of you had a good weekend as well.

I owe the missis big style now - another Saturday and Sunday of cycling. Another undulating Saturday training ride with me getting shot out the back even though my heart peaked at 189BPM. It'll be a flat one next week if it's owt to do with me.
Sunday was the Spring into the Dales Audax from Hebden Bridge. I've done this ride a few times before and I think most people who've ridden it would agree it's a tough ride out to Bolton Abbey and back; it always has a large number of cyclists doing it. Managed to avoid the usual mistake of trying to keep up with people that are just plain better than me on the first long climb out of Hebden thanks to sensible club mates and the trusty heart rate monitor. It turned out thankfully, an uneventful ride without me getting the chance to show people my consummate
puncture repair skills. Completed the ride at a little slower average speed than previous years, but it was nice to finish feeling (relatively) perky after 70 hard miles rather than utterly on my knees for the sake of an extra half mile an hour average speed.
Thanks to Greg for showing me the way so I didn't have to rely on the dodgy old memory, and for setting a nice steady consistant followable tempo on the last long (long) drag back to Hebden.

Just 4 for the Sunday ride. Self, Howard, Andy and Arnie.
The ride was marred by a nasty crash when Arnie skidded on some loose gravel on the road to Jordans Moss and met painfully with a drystone wall and barbed wire fence, his bike being tossed an improbable distance into the field beyond.... The paramedics were (as always) superb. After fitting a neck brace and lifting Arnie out, Arnie was able to walk (painfully) to the waiting stretcher and was chatting in the ambulance. They took him first to Northallerton, but he's since been transferred to Middlesboro' for more Xrays. Will keep you posted.

I did my 4th and 5th(handicap) race on Saturday. I made the same mistake again by towing everyone around, I kept zigzagging but no one would over take, so next time I'll be slowing down to about 18mph that'll make them overtake. It was at a Circuit near Derby called Darley Moor and organised by Manchester Wheelers, one really tight bend and a couple of chicanes, was a great circuit buy windy. When it came to the sprint finish I was done for I lost all power and everyone left me like I was standing still.
I improved my tactics for the Handicap race and came second in that, it felt harder and faster than the first race and my legs where knackered.
The turnout was not high, about 12-14 in the first race and 8 in the handicap. Although on the finish of the first race only 7 was there, must have dropped the rest.
I'm going to be doing the Cheshire Road Race Series I think that's on a Tuesday night
I'm hoping I'll win some, I'm getting better and my power is going up, I'm at around 290W Avg for 16 miles, so about 38 mins.

Sorry to hear about Arnie. I hope he's OK and wish him well.
A good turnout for the MTBers at Round 2 of the NYMBO Trailquest League yesterday at Langdale/Broxa Forests.
The weather was perfect with clear skies but not too warm for dashing around for 3 hours. Ground conditions were good too with mostly dry tracks and, since the demise of Langdale Quest, fewer 4x4 ruts to contend with.
Good results too with Steph top of her category as usual (380 pts), Seb winning the Youth Category by a country mile (330 pts) and Wayne using his local knowledge to improve his PB by over 100pts (350 pts).
Well done all!

Best wishes Arnie for a quick recovery.
I did the Hull Thursday RC RR on Sunday on the Newbald course. It is a tough course with a long uphill section. I got dropped on the second lap, did another lap then called it a day.
Before the start Bob Howden stressed to the riders about keeping inside the white line, so as soon as we set off riders were right across the road, no wonder there are objections to road racing!
Apparently some riders couldn't get an entry as the entry was full, yet on the day they ran out of reserves as so many people didn't turn up. 2 turned up on spec and got a ride.

I continued my training as a British Cycling Commissaire so no riding.
Saturday I was at Tranwell for the Regional B 3rd & 4th's second week of this 5 race league, 33 riders entered (Max45) some great racing with a couple of attacks early on, all together with 2 laps to go 3 riders attacked and stayed away to the finish. Tommy Murray winning.
Sunday Middleton Classic, Regional A 2,3,4 again the race had 70 riders signing on (Max80) so all reserves got a ride. This is a challenging circuit around Scots Gap, Rothley, 8 laps, all together until halfway a group of 4 got a good gap and worked hard to stay away. On the run in to the finish it came together with one of the escapees Jake Tanner taking the win.

This was a good ride. I took the day to visit friends in Manchester the day before and rode up to the local youth hostel for the night. The catering was excellent, plenty of food and tea, plus bananas at the first control ... all for a ride fee of 3! How does he do it? Handily, there was also a .gpx track to follow, so I could try out my new Garmin toy.Broom Wagon wrote: Sunday was the Spring into the Dales Audax from Hebden Bridge. There were a decent number of Cliftonites out (me, Steve, Pete, Steph, Alistair Bernard, have I got that right?) and overall the event was very well attended, with a few other clubs as well. The sun shone and there were plenty of wheels to hang onto. All in all, an excellent weekend. Thanks to Steve for giving me a lift back to York.
Just a quick update on Arnie.
He's broken a bone in his neck. He's been put in a special head brace for 3-6 months. He's also starting on traction to try and realign the break. Sounds rather unpleasant. He's going to be up in the hospital in Middlesboro for many weeks. PM me if you want his ward number - and am hoping to pop up on Friday and can take along any messages....

Just a quick blast round the trailquest on Saturday and Spring into the Dales on Sunday for me this weekend. Left Hebden Bridge on Sunday with a good group of Cliftonite's and a couple of non members, lost them when I had a rear wheel blow out at about 40mph - had visions of coming off and re-breaking the radius I did back in February - luckily I didn't but we lost the group and myself and Steph tried to catch them up for a good while afterwards. Caught up with them as they had a cup of tea at the 2nd checkpoint but we didn't hang about and decided to head to Burnsall for a bite to eat at the half way point. They managed to catch us up again a few miles outside of Burnsall and they carried on as we stopped but Alistair thought we'd had another mechanical and turned back to find out where we were, sat outside in the sun having a cup of tea. Only my 2nd time out on a road bike since I broke my arm in February and it felt ok despite it seizing up a few times. Thanks to Alistair and Steph for towing me back the last few miles

I did the Trailquest at Langdale end on Saturday riding with Steph and got 380 points. Was one of the most enjoyable rides I have done and the first Trailquest. Though I have done three Lanequests before. Was really lovely weather and the forest tracks were in great condition. You didn't need a MTB really as I had both the rear and front suspension locked out most of the time. We managed a good combination of route planning, navigation and pacing ourselves so it did'n't seem that hard! Thanks to Steph for partnering me and suggesting some excellent routes. Also she stopped me getting carried away early on, going to fast and blowing up (like I did on the Scotton).
Really sorry to hear about Arnie - I hope you're coping OK up in Middlesbrough, and thanks Rob for keeping us posted. And well done Will for getting placed in a race!
I was out with a cold half the week, but was recovered enough by Sunday to ride out through Millington and Huggate to Wetwang to look at the course for Sunday's road race. Unfortunately somebody seems carelessly to have left a large hill right in the middle of the first straight. Hopefully it'll be gone by race time though.
It was a great day to be out whizzing over the Wolds; I saw dozens of riders around Pocklington, on the GH Stancer rides I guess. And I earned a Classic Cycling Moment by battling into a headwind to chase down two riders on the A166, hoping to share the work back to York, who then turned off the very moment I caught them...
