Overnight ride to Ullswater and back
1830 start from Square on Saturday week (30th Aug). Quite a bit of interest following the previous post. Some FAQs:
How far is it Rob? About 390km, depending on how many times we get lost and how much we want to exaggerate...
Is it hilly Rob? At times, but we do climb Kirkstone from its easier side.
Will I need lights Rob? There's 9 hours of darkness to contend with so you'll need a fair bit of battery power and back up lights. You'll need to be able to see as well as be seen (if you get my drift). Some fluorescent stuff would be sensible.
Will it get cold Rob? Check the weather forecast, but remember your body does funny things at 4 in the morning and you may need more layers than you'd expect.
When will we get back Rob? I'm guessing that we'll be back early to mid afternoon, but depends a lot on the weather. I don't propose riding for a "time" - this ride is all about being self reliant, working as a team and looking after each other. Everyone will have bad patches and we must help each other through.
What do I need to carry Rob? Lots of food and water. There're 90 dark, hilly miles between Skipton and Penrith when there will be no shops/cafes open. I'd strongly suggest bringing some appetising food - snorting a line of Gel in the early hours may not be a pleasant prospect! Am seriously considering porting my cotton-duck number by Carridice.
Will I get wet Rob? Now you're just being silly.

Green light and counting Andy.
I'm planning on riding the Airborne with mudguards and, probably, my Carridice saddlebag (with lots of food and drink). 3 sets of lights (front and back) plus hi vis vest. I'll volunteer to carry a spare folding tyre if someone else carries a phone/camera.
Am looking forward to it and glad you're coming along. That makes 4 nailed on definites plus another 10 varying from "interested", through "maybe" to "probably". Come on Guys, commitment with a capital "C"!

Glad you're interested Will, but with all honesty I'd suggest it not a ride to undertake in your first season. Keep your powder dry this time.
Ullswater ride latest:
1830 departure from Exhibition Square
ca. 2100 Supper stop in Skipton (F&C cafe unless we find better)
ca. 0030 Water tap at petrol station near Kirkby Lonsdale
ca. 0230 pic-nic in Windermere!! (bring your own!)
ca. 0330 Crest Kirkstone Pass
Breakfast: Little Chef, Penrith or Appleby
Brunch: Hawes
Final sit down stop at maybe Masham (anybody fancying meeting up and pacing us home.....?)
Am basing the above on 15mph on the road - not sure how realistic that is by Sunday morning.
Would suggest a high carbohydrate diet on Friday/Saturday and the longest lie in manageable on Saturday morning!!!!
Weather forecast is, currently, for mild conditions, light winds and periods of rain arriving on Sunday (by which time I doubt we'll care
)
Bring waterproofs, usual spares/tools, money, extra layers (although mild it might not feel like that just before dawn) and plenty of food/drink.
Should be great and we can bore everyone senseless reminiscing all winter....
