That's the same weekend as the Dales Grimpeur isn't it......now that is a tough ride.

Right, here's a stab at a seaside version - the Flake '160'. Thanks mal for the Hackness hint - you can cross the Eastern moors without using the A170. But I can't cope with anticlockwise; it just feels funny (despite the bonus of left turns).

Still in three sections:

1. York to Helmsley via Crayke, Wass, Osgoodby, Boltby, Rievaulx. 43 miles.

2. Helmsley to Sandsend via Cockayne, Gillamoor, Rosedale, Egton, Aislaby. 41 miles

3. Sandsend to York via Ruswarp, Hackness, Snainton, Yedingham, Heslerton, West Lutton, Duggleby, Thixendale, Millington, Yapham and Stamford Bridge. 75 miles.
[apologies to Safari users, you may have to paste in those links; IE doesn't seem to mind.]

Total 160 miles approx

Needless to say, improvements could be made:

> I've never ridden half those roads, and so there may be some too busy/too boring/too flat or where I've hit the town but missed the climb.
> There's a four-mile stretch of the A171 south of Whitby. There doesn't seem much choice, and I guess there'll be a few caravans.
> Not sure where the cafe stops fit in. If the first is Helmsley, the second should be Snainton or somewhere around there (not forgetting the Trillo's van at Sandsend for Howard...)

And Broom is right that according to AUK the Dales Grimpeur is on 30/5, so it's either a two-day North Yorks extravaganza for some or choose a different date...

I'd guess that quite a few Cliftonites will be planning on doing the Dales Grimpeur.....

Hi Tom

Dave is right so I think it would be better to change the date.
With a date change to avoid clashing with any of the other Challenge rides we can list it as the club run for that week and hopefully get a good turn out.

Agreed. When is a good date? Weekend before might suit me, but maybe Audaxers don't want a hard ride only 6 days before the Grimpeur.

Also a question for anyone: which side of Rosedale is 'the chimney'? Looks like it's to the southwest, in which case the current route rides down the chimney and up the other side (which itself looks pretty serious...)

cheers,
tom

Yes, the current route would go down Chimney bank, climb on other side is longer but not as steep.

As descending Chimney is a waste of a descent, could go Gilamoor, Farndale, Blakey Bank(another killer climb), Past Blakey pub, then descend to Rosedale, then back on route!

Thanks Dave - got me a thinking on a new route. To the coast via Blakey, back via Rosedale. Loses the Hackness hack but gains Birdsall:

2. Helmsley - Sandsend via Cockayne, Blakey Ridge. 45 miles.

3. Sandsend-York via Egton, Rosedale, Hutton, Marton, Old Malton, Birdsall, Thixendale, Millington. 73 miles.

Lets get the date fixed - then we can 'fine tune' the route!

Right you are - I start the bidding at June 7th - 8 days after the Grimp Audax and a good 2 weeks before the solstice.
