Simon, we're jealous. Having been up there half a dozen times or so I can say that the midgie peak season is definitely August. Also, the train journey to Malliag (ferry port to Skye) is one of the "great train journeys of the world". Not the cheapest way to get there, but its 8 hours from York to Mallaig - just sit back and enjoy the show!

We spent a week on Skye at the end of May a few years ago, understanding the midges didn't get hungry until late Summer. Not so and got eaten alive every evening which was a shame as we had a full week of cloudless skies.

We were climbing the Cuillins though so I can't offer any advice on the biking.

Late April to Mid June is the driest time and usually OK for midge avoidance.

EDIT - Re Paul C above, in recent years the midge season has begun earlier as winters have been milder.

September can be good as well if it's cold overnight as that keeps the midges away.

Last time I went to the Cuillins (when I still had a head for heights) I stayed at The Old Inn at Carbost. Very nice rooms, good food (ample portions!) and good location. I think they now have a bunkhouse if you want to save a few pennies.
