Right, I'm bored at work so let's see if I can start a fight...who do you think will pick up the prize this year? Name your nominee and your reasons. This year has seen success for Brits in the olympic disciplines (swimming, rowing, sailing, athletics etc.), paralympics, tennis, motorsport and others.
Bearing in mind a person with no personality usually wins, I think Lewis Hamilton will stroll away with the prize (though I really hope he doesn't), with Andy Murray a close second.
In terms of actual sporting achievement (and with this being a cycling forum) I think a cyclist should be up there, but which one?

AA's right that Hamilton probably has it wrapped up. After the weekend's performances, I don't think that our Rugby League or Cricket teams will feature too highly. I think Hoy could have been in the running (well, riding...), but Hamilton has probably claimed it at the last minute, a bit like the F1 championship overall really.
But more importantly, AA has hit upon one of my pet hates - why does the BBC insist on calling it "Sport's Personality". The vast majority of high-achieving sports people seem to have had a personality by-pass; probably an unfortunate but necessary side-effect of being so dedicated, focussed and disciplined, so why not call it "Sport's Person". End of rant...

I am sorry to say you might as well close the book on who is going to win it. After Sunday Lewis Hmailton is a shoe-in. Winning the Championship was good enough in my opinion for him to win it but it was the circumstance in which it happened people are going to remember.
I heard on the radio from one listener that it was bad new for Rebecca Addlington and Chirs Hoy even though in my opinion a cyclsit should win it condidering we have numerous World Champoins.

Lewis will win it and rightfully so. I actually think he has a good personality, really enjoyed seeing him on Top Gear, and let's give credit where it's due, he has just become the youngest F1 winner ever. Hoy should get 2nd, Murray shouldn't even being in the running as he is the most miserable person to walk this planet.
The British cycling team should win the team award, depends how they define their selection criteria and Rebecca Romero should win the best picture award (OK I made that up) for her picture in the Observer.

Here's a list of the winners over the last 10 yrs or so...I actually think some of these do have a bit of personality and charisma...well, maybe at least half...and quite a large proportion have actually achieved great international sporting achievements (apart from the 'round ball' contingent).

I agree that LH's appearence on Top Gear was entertaining, but I just get the impression that he is 'pre-programmed' before his interviews and that hides whatever character he has.

Nicole Cooke. End of debate - the most successful UK sportsperson this year and with a personality to match - national champion, olympic champion (the first GB gold medal of the olympics) and world champion. I watched both the olympic and worlds races and they were both fantastic. She always produces the goods when it matters and it would be good to see her get the title after that tosser Adrian Chiles was so disrespectful when she was last nominated a couple of years ago.

Wouldn't argue with you Paul. Have always had a love-hate relationship with BSPY. Always say I'm never going to watch it again. But when it comes to it I do. I reckon its important to recognise all the dedication across the sports, incl. LH. Less concerned who "wins", how on earth do you compare - if we can't decide which cyclist then how the 'eck can the general public pick between a swimmer, a driver, a boxer..... Even Zara Philips thought her win was ridiculus.

This is sort of my gripe. 30 seconds given to a dedicated champion. I don't blame AC though - more the format. AC is capable of soooo much more than this. He did an interview with Jane Tomlinson and her husband on R5 before the great N Run a couple of years ago and I had to pull the car over for a few minutes I was so overcome with it....Adrian Chiles was so disrespectful when she was last nominated

I will vote for Nicle if she gets nominated because she has acheived her success on her own terms and is an inspiration. I heard an interview she did a couple of years ago and her response to the people who thought she needed to loose weight is something a lot of young women could do with hearing.
If she is up against Paula I would have a problem because she shows time and time again how to pick yourself up from adversity and come back. A modern replacing of the Robert the Bruce and spider tale.

and besides anyone who can quit the greatest sporting event in the world when they've a good chance of winning on the Champs Elysees so they can go and train to cycle round a track a bit in the hope of winning a shiny medal in that other competition....can't remember what its called....ollylimpics or something.....well they're a disgrace to cycling 
Has anybody considered Victoria Pendleton? She or Nicole Cooke would really put a smile on my face though Chris Hoy would be good also. As for Mark Cavendish I'm not really that sure, the 3 wins were great but the Olympics didn't go that well, maybe he should have stayed for the final stage. And I don't know that much about him, but what about Bradley Wiggins?
In reality I'm guessing Chris Hoy is the most likely to be nominated but looks like Lewis Hamilton has snatched the title.
