Weekend Roundup

Post by Rob »

My turn to start this week then.

Sunday clubrun for me. Love this time of year - all the colours and falling leaves. Great route from Helen around Fewston and thanks to all (Helen, Steve S, Nick, Alice, Mal, Richard, Michael, Paul, Dave C) for good company.

We could do with a report from the beer festival! And how has all this night riding been going at Dalby? And what about "group de Kevin" and "group de Howard"?

See you next week.

In my enforced absence from the bike I can instead report that York under 11s rugby team travelled to Mold in North Wales to compete in a rugby tournament. They won all 5 matches to win outright, scoring 17 tries and conceding 1 so at least my weekend wasn't completely wasted.

A bit of a 2nd hand report on the MTBing from me so maybe any attendees can fill in the gaps.

Thurs and Fri 2 groups headed to Dalby for the night rides. Unfortunately, in both cases, the leaders never arrived. Gully had the lurgy on Thursday and Jez took a break from falling off his bike and fell off the road in his car instead on the way there on Friday. Luckily he's fine but the wheels are a bit dented. Apparently the riding was good both nights.

Friday night we were doing some research into the nutritional content of hops and barley at the beer festival. A fair sized group turned out and we even bumped into the Cycle Heaven Annual Conference. A curry for some of us afterwards soon spoilt any good we'd done with the ale. :D

Saturday Gill, Steph, Andy and Hazel were in action at the NYMBO Trailquest in Nidderdale, winning their respective categories. All I've heard is it was windy and wet.

Today a handful headed to Pateley Bridge for the day for a ride whilst others were playing at Dalby again.

So a quiet weekend for the MTBers.

Rode with Kevin's group on Saturday, cut off from the others at Gilling and headed back to York as I did not want to do too much as I was attempting my first cyclocross at Huddersfield the next day.

Sunday's cyclecross was an experience with about 80 of us in the Vets and Womens race setting off across the field at quite a pace with me well down the field not wanting to get in anyones way until I got used to some of the more technical sections, it was every bit as hard as I expected but really enjoyed it and will do some more events as the winter season goes on.

Andy Johnston was 18th, Gary Kitchen 44th and I rolled in at 53rd.

Jamie Sharpe (York Cycleworks) won the Senior/Junior race.

Was out with Kevin's group on Saturday. Lovely route up the usual selection of "blimey-I-never-knew-this-existed" roads to lunch stop at Coxwold. Steady pace with some familiar faces including Steve and Ian H, some Saturday regulars I'd not met before and a new lass from Aberford who immediately slotted easily into the group riding thing. Autumnal colours, some blue sky, and just a brisk westerly making the return run harder work in places.

Flying visit home to see my folks, taking in a West Midlands League 'cross event near Dudley whilst I was there - big field of nearly 50 seniors, out of those that actually finished I was 41st out of 43. Not a great result, though it was hard work and great fun, but only the first off-road event of the year for me, and training has been thin on the ground due to work commitments.

Good effort there, Ian, for a first attempt and amongst such a big field. Good 'cross turnout this weekend by the club, too, all told - 4 Clifton riders amongst the finishers in 2 separate events.

Saturday Run

Post by Carl Jones »

Decent ride out on Saturday with the 'middle group' (??!!) ended up doing 70 miles in the end (20 more than the advertised 50!) but I ain't complaining. Kept getting dropped on the hills again but it felt good to be back after two weeks out with a torn calf (football injury, not cycling) thanks to the lads for helping me with my puncture and waiting for Hero and I to catch-up. Think Hero suffered too and I had to leave him at Strensall as time was getting on - hope he made it back o.k. Think Rob's Sunday slog may be on this week for me.

See you later.

I finally got out in Manchester with the Wheelers, did 64 miles going into cheshire, went past the Jodrell Bank telescope and they are huge! It was cold and windy and I was in summer kit still so I was frozen!! About 10 miles in someone got dropped and decided to go his own way, I was surprised we where only doing like 17-20mph, one guy did well he was on fixed.
