Club Hill Climb - Sun 5th Oct

Post by ClaireG »

A reminder that the Club Hill Climb is next Sunday 5th Oct.

Start Bishop Wilton at 11am.

The climb is the minor road which goes up from the X-roads to join the A166. Finish just prior to the junction.

Entries on the line £2 Senior; £1 Junior / Unemployed
(a bargain!)

Max gradient 20%, distance 1.2 Km

There are several trophies up for grabs, but more importantly there is the glory for the winners and respect for all those taking part.

Depart 0930 from the Square for those riding out together.

See you there

Don't know if it will be a concern but I talked to my friend about the Hill Climb and she told me that Pocklington Running club are organising a road race in Bishop Wilton this sunday morning and there will be a lot of people around the Park Lane, Pocklington Lane junction throughout most of the morning (people arriving 1030, race starts at 11, goes off road from Park Lane).

Thanks for the "heads up" Michael.

I'm trying to get in touch with the secreatary of Pock Runners, but we're pretty confident all will be fine. Park Lane is at the other end of the village (not that its a big place) and we don't tend to bring many cars. It doesn't look like they're planning to use "our" road.

Either way, its too late to change the event as the police have been notified.

If we find there *is* a problem we'll post on here. Otherwise I think its safe to assume our event will go ahead as normal.

OK Guys, have spoken to the event secretary of the Pocklington Runners' event and there are no problems. They have parking sorted at the other end of the village and have no need to venture onto the Worsendale climb.

My only comment would be that there'll be more pressure on the local residents than usual and so it would be great if we could all take extra care to be on A+++ behaviour and be very friendly!

See you Sunday!!!!

Just a reminder that I'll be riding out from the Square at 0930 prompt if anyone wants to join me; those either riding or watching. Planning to go for a spin around the Wolds afterwards with a tea and a bun in Millington cafe.

After today's hillclimb my memory banks seemed to wipe themselves clean, in some post-traumatic compensatory thingy, and as a result I've completely forgotten who I saw taking photos on the way up. If it was you, could you drop me an email at constructiveatzendotcodotuk (replace as appropriate) - I'm after a couple of pics to accompany a press release to the local rag.

Thanks!

<edit:- Press release sent, so don't worry!>

Club Hill Climb 2008

Well done to all riders in today’s hill climb up Worsendale at Bishop Wilton.

Some good times recorded, considering that the conditions were harder than in recent years because there was no helping wind up today, which we usually get on this climb. That puts Jamie’s ride in perspective and into the fastest 4 rides recorded (by us) on this hill climb since 2000: Kit Gilham, Clifton CC 2006 (5-24); Alistair Kay, Cycleworks 2000 (5-29); Mark Turrell, Clifton CC 2000 (5-45); Jamie Sharp, Cycleworks 2008 (5-47).

The full results are below and whilst all riders should be applauded, I’ve just picked out 2 more rides worthy of note:

1st Clifton Senior Rider was our evergreen Paul Musgrave. Paul would probably not describe himself as ‘evergreen’ (Rob says, probably more like ‘ever-grumpy’), but Paul, our congratulations to you for putting yourself up for the competition and pulling out another good performance & the win!

Kieran Smith, what can I say……you’ve had Robert and I checking our maths, rechecking how we restarted the watches for the MTB event, scratching our heads, but no, your time of 7-15 is definitely correct! Hats off to this young 16 year old, who rode out on his MTB with Paul’s team of mud-pluggers, arrived late for the event, but was still keen to have a go against the clock up the hill. As our timekeeper had already descended from the top, Paul 1st offered to unofficially time himself & Kieran using his wrist stopwatch. After some hesitation on our part, I’m glad that we decided to give the MTB-ers another official start, so that Kieran could fly up the hill, post his official time and take 5th place in the whole event (versus some significantly lighter bikes and fresher riders!). Kieran and all the MTB-ers that rode out have convinced me to instigate a 1st MTB prize for this event and for future years.

Finally, big thanks to my helpers of Bernard, Elaine, Siobhan and Robert. It’s great to organise an event where the team are willing volunteers, manage the event professionally, more than cover their job and help tidy up at the end! Thanks Guys!

Well done to all! I think a special well done is also due to Arthur M - if that's what you can do within a year of taking up cycling it's anybody's guess how fast you'll be next year!!

Without wishing to overegg Kieran's achievement I think it should be pointed out that last weekend he did a challenge walk in the Dales covering 40 miles in 1 day, and still has the blisters. And yesterday he ran the Junior Great North Run and came 10th! Clearly our hill climb was just a warm down.

Maybe it's time introduce a drugs testing program
