Bank Holiday Weekend round up

Post by Helen »

Thought I would kick of this weekend with an update from the Club Run.

7 of us met up at the square for the 8-30 start in a variety of clothing and fingers crossed that the weather reports were wrong. We headed of down the B road to Helmsey and I was soon feeling over dressed.Willy turned of at Helmsey to go home via Cockayne and we set of Hawnby and on to Osmotherly for an early cafe stop.Mal and Andy J split of to go up Carlton bank and back to York whilst Nick,Simon W(on a rare road bike ride),Dave C and I went on to Inglby Greenhow ,Westerdale and up to the bank before riding over to Rosedale up the Chimney and on to Hutton Le Hole.As it wasn't yet 3-30 we stopped for tea and apple pie before setting of back to York for 6pm

118 miles door to door with a fair deal of climbing,a little rain and good company it was a great day and a good warm up for the Grimpeur.

The Saturday Social riders were lucky with the weather. As usual there was a selection at the Square and in Howard's absence a group of 5 - Chris, Iain, Iona, Geoff (I think that's his name but may well be wrong!) and myself - had a ride out to Sledmere via Buttercrambe, Birdsall, and Settrington. Unfortunately at the top of Acklam a careless horsewoman managed to lassoo Iona's handlebars with the reins of the horse she was leading, bringing her down in a manner reminiscent of Lance Armstrong and the musette bag. Fortunately there was little harm to rider and bike.

At Sledmere House (Hall?) 4 of us had a nice lunch sitting outside whilst Geoff met up with the family to visit Wharram Percy.

The return journey was an uneventful route via Huggate, Millington & Stamford Bridge for a typical Saturday 70ish miles.

Saturday did the Wiggy 300km Audax, 5.00 a.m. depart, a great ride via Pocklington, Malton, Easingwold, Ripon, Richmond, Stokesley, Helmsley, Sutton on Forest and back to HQ. No rain, good company & back home for tea.

First of all apols to all who were looking for me at Wigginton
Completely messed up calendar.
I was planning on riding the shorter event - just on a different weekend!
Good effort to Andy on the 300.

After busy week didn't feel up to either 8:30 start or 120 miles so had a lie in and set off to do the Ron Kit route thinking i stood a good chance of meeting the intrepids at Hutton le Hole

As it turned out I was still an hour or so early and opted to complete the route proper and got slightly damp on Castle Howard high road. Nowhere near as damp as on the Ron Kit ride last year though.

Reminiscing about rides - did anyone have incidents with wild fowl on the Illy Imperial? I nearly lost my lunch when riding the event with Steve and Helen and a hen got stuck in my mudguard on a high speed descent.

Helen - it was me who was with you on Sunday, not the other Andy!

Me & Mal Craven split from the group at Carlton and went up Carlton Bank into a nasty headwind, and on the descent to ChopGate, Mal had a problem with his left thigh and it was touch and go whether he would make it back to York and getting to Helmsley was the aim.

Got back to Helmsley in the wet, a nice fast descent into there, and whilst filling the water bottles back up, one of my cleats broke away, meaning I couldn't clip into the pedals and had to sit and spin all the way back, what a pair we were. Full credit to Mal for getting back in the circumstances.

Got back into York as the heavens opened, and returned home soaked and weary, but with a nicely burnt face from the mornings sun.

Having finally got my dodgy shoulder sorted was back to normal active pursuits last week so went climbing on Wednesday. Climbing walls are like giant buckets of germs; by Friday I was sneezing all over the place and by Sunday, when I decided a bit of serious turboing was called for, I had to coat my office floor with newspapers in addition to the usual plastic matting. Finally hit the real roads today - absolutely glorious out there this morning. Hill sprints followed by a very smiley bimble around between spring green-ness. Lovely.

Was it windy? Looking out of the window now at college it looks like its going to be a windy ride back home in 2 hours, and boiling.

Light breeze this morning from the north-east. Should be vaguely behind you on the way home unless it changes direction.

Hill sprints; well it's not that much of a hill but it's enough to ensure you're (or more specifically, I'm) giving it full whack. Joe Friel suggests 3-4% and it's bang on that. That triangle of roads out past Appleton Roebuck (I think half the racers in the club use them for something), ridden clockwise, windmill on your right. Out of the saddle and get some speed on as you pass the big tree on the right, then absolute max until you pass the bench. Then right, right, and right again and you've had bang on five minutes of recovery before the next one. Repeat 6-10 times, once a week, until October!

I was a bit gutted I couldnt join a club run this weekend due to work but managed to get out Sat pm for 40 odd miles. A bit of warm weather makes a huge difference to your performance but not even a warm British day can prepare me for a hot day in the Pyrenees in July for the Etape. I'm starting a to get a little bit worried now its its just a few weeks away, especially now that they have published the time shecdule to avoid the broom wagon. But on analysis it doesnt seem too daunting.

I know you have done the Etape Arthur and my start number is 2215 does this mean I'll be in the upper third of starters and not at the back?

Jon

PS

Willhub, if you ever want to join up for a ride one evening aroound Cawood/Ryther I'm usually out for 20-30 miles from around 1845 3/4 times a week.

Rode the Wiggy 100K on Saturday which goes via Brimham rocks, as did Willy, Dave C, and Elaine (think Ive got the name right) Nice weather and a long long cafe stop at Ripley despite been the first there to order our food and drinks the order somehow got lost and we ended up as nearly the last ones away, Rode nearly all the course with my mate Chris from Easingwold as we have for the last 5 years.

Got back home then went to town for a few well earned Pints and a curry.

I should be out tonight. I usually get to the mini roundabout in Cawood (where I saw you that Sat to cycle into York) around 1900. I usually ride thro Ryther down past th Airfield at Church Fenton and back throught Bishopwood. You could meet up there and ride with us and get back to Wistow quite easily.
