Weekend Roundup 15th/16th October

Post by Jon G »

Just 8 out on the inters ride to Thorpe perrow on Saturday. Joining myself were Dave, James , Tony, graham, John b, kev n and Rich. Slight tail wind from the start allowed a brisk pace from the off and according to my calculations we covered the first 23 miles in just over and hour  . This meant we arrived at the cafe just after 12pm. We were going a again before 1pm and this meant we had no problem getting graham backin shipton before 4pm. Couldn't really fault the service in the cafe though as our food arrived before we even sat down p  . We ended up coming back through studley park and past fountains abbey which was a good choice who ever decided that. A few more lumps but quieter roads compared to ones around ripon and boroughbridge. Back in York for 4pm and even saw graham drive by at the A19 junction at Skelton. I arrived home with 115 mile on clock in good daylight thanks to the pace that was set by Rich , James and Dave. :D

Yea , a good day out before the autumn really sets in and the weather tails off.

Six of us on the Hostel weekend to Ingleton, Rob, Steen, Richard D,Paul M,Andrew NG, and I, 8am start saw us taking Rob's route in good weather conditions through Wetherby, Otley, Ilkley, Appletreewick, Cracoe, (full English breakfast stop) Hellifield, Bolton by Bowland, Slaidburn, (coffee and pudding stop) High Bentham, then on to Ingleton total 97 miles with 7313 ft climbing.

Great Hostel very modern and for £40 each for bed and breakfast and a 3 course evening meal was excellent value, after a few pints in the pub we returned to our room where the oldest fella in the group was left a choice of which top bunk I wanted, quite tricky when you like several visits to the loo during the night, had to laugh when the note on the toilet doors said to save disturbing other guests please don't use between 10pm and 7am, (fat chance).

The following day we set off with a long climb out of Ingleton with the weather quite grey and hoping to get a reasonable distance before the expected rain started, this was less than an hour and couldn't have been worse timing as we had to climb from Dent up over the coal road and down to Garsdale head in the heavy rain where some short time later Rob along with loyal lieutenant Steen arrived at the bottom with only one useful pedal the other one broke just before the summit he then pushed gallantly on to Hawes about 6 miles on still in the heavy rain of course and carried on to look for any possible bike shop while the rest of us had to endure some fantastic coffee in the cafe.

Rob soon returned to join us with a new pair of pedals on his bike and a smile on his face, small secluded bike shop well found by him.

After Richard fixed his flat rear tyre we were off again heading through Askrigg, Redmire, through Middleham in the ever improving weather to have lunch in Masham returning through Grewelthorpe and Ripon to York 94 miles plus 5413 ft of climbing.

A great weekend, thanks guys.
