Inters/A-Ride for Sat, Mar 12

The forecast is looking rosy for Saturday; double-digit temps (read: SHORTS weather), dry with a light southerly breeze.

I'm breaking into new territory here, since I've not been to Osmotherley. I've heard it's a nice ride and so I cobbled the route together from what I could find online.

It's a bit out and back to/from Kilburn, and thus I'm open to harnessing the collective wisdom here to correct/change the route to make it more interesting etc.

Depending on the numbers and composition of the group, we may need to split into pace groups.

140Km / 87 miles square to square, plus a few lumpy bits

As always for this time of year, fenders and lights optional

Nice ride Tony. The main alteration I would make would be an outward route via Farlington, Brandsby, Yearsley, Ampleforth and then take the road from Byland Abbey to the bottom of White Horse Bank. It adds around 4.5 miles on to the ride making it a little over 80 miles but it does make for a more varied route. It really is a lovely ride over the moors. One of the best!

I agree with James on route, plus I personally don't ride on that stretch of Wiggington B road.

The route you have plotted above Osmotherley is a forest track, not suitable (near reservoir). Also at Thimbleby your route goes off road. The route we go on normally goes onto the A19 for half a mile or so and then through Over Silton, Kepwick, Cowesby, Kirby Knowle, Felixkirk.

If you look at the ordnance survey maps/memory map you will see better which are proper roads, which google type maps don't.

I'm hoping to make it all the way round tomorrow although I'm likely to be a bit slow on the hills. Dave has outlined the usual route to and from Osmotherley which I would commend. The road over the moors is lovely albeit a bit saw-tooth in profile. Am happy to lead a 'slower' group' around if the faster lads want to press on a bit

Also agree with James route on outward leg, most of the time s I've gone to osmotherly I've gone that way more or less, certainly better than wiggy road.

Thanks Dave for mentioning the off road bits, spotted them last night, wasn't entirely sure whether they were off road or not but did think there's always a reason we don't go that way . I do have a route in garmin which more or less is the same its 85 miles from the square. It's from a ride in August when I last went to osmotherly hope to see you at the square.

Incidentally, without wanting to stir a hornets nest , what are people opinions using bikes without mudguards, in other words when is considered acceptable to start riding one without upsetting people Because c,mom the British weather is just as bad in the summer let's face it only abit warmer Having said that though I'll still be bringing bike with mudguards as I need to do a few things with summer bike to make a it ridable

I always was under the impression that March = no mudguards if the weather has been ok? Looking at the forecast for today & tomorrow, I don't think there is much of an issue to go sans guards.
That's my opinion, I'm sure others may agree or dis-agree.

I was originally informed that we w/could come into Osmotherley from the North, via the reservoir, but I guess not

The new route adds a few hundred metres of climbing, so it should be a good, hard day out.

Tony-I went that way with the Sunday ride last week and can confirm it'll be good practise for the chaps doing the Fred
