Weekend Round-up 4th/5th July

Post by Dr Dave »

16 riders on the Inters ride to Castleton this week - won't list everyone. The weather was drizzling with lots of gravel washed onto the roads. We kept together as a bunch through Stillington, but on the climb to Yearsley the bunch was splitting and this was repeated again climbing out of Ampleforth so once in Helmsley it seemed sensible to split into 2 groups with the faster riders going ahead - also eases pressure on the cafe if a large group arrives en-masse.
The 2nd group - Rich, Kevin, M-L Tony, Craig, Ian, Graham, self and a guest rider - Joe, ascended Bransdale into the mist. Unfortunately Graham's shifter expired and he had to turn back before the gates. Ian stopped to rescue a baby bird, the remainder of us trundled around the loop more or less together, until on the way back out of the dale, near the cattlegrid, the sun started breaking through and the mists parted.
Joe had to get back so headed for Malton and home, the rest of us continued, Kevin and Craig taking the long drag up Blakey ridge, the remaining 4 heading up Farndale for the bank. Rich stopped to fix his deflating rear tube then rejoined everyone as we regrouped at the top of Blakey Bank - Tony in particular expressing his sentiments regarding the merits of the climb
By now time was passing and some of the group were starting to flag. We rode to the next junction where a decision was made for Craig and Ian to continue to Castleton whilst Kevin and Rich felt that Rosedale and home was more sensible. Not wanting to abandon them to their fate I accompanied them with a strengthening westerly building - Tony too came with us.
A quick lunch in Rosedale and we came home via Appleton, Slingsby and Foston. We made steady progress into the breeze but I was a little weary by the time we hit town.
I understand that the other group had a few route-finding issues on the way back from Castleton - no doubt someone will be able to relate their home journey.

It's great that more riders are getting out now that the summer is here and the longer days permit a proper day out. The down-side is that a larger group, with a wider ability spread, is harder to manage - both on the road and in the cafe. Not sure what the best way to deal with this is as numbers do vary from week to week and I try to keep things inclusive.....

I'm not out for the next 2 Saturdays - can someone step up and choose suitable routes etc. Cheers!
Keep pedalling!

Many congratulations and 'chapeau' to Duncan Sleigh who achieved a most creditable 6th place in the Stockton Wheelers 100mile TT, which resulted in the British record being broken by the winner, Richard Bideau,

Thanks for organizing a nice day out, Dave, and good call on the split.

I was particularly happy with the late-day sunshine, but that one climb isn't on my list of favourites

169Km, 2088m averaging >25 Kph for me this week. I'll also miss next Saturday's ride, returning the following weekend.

As described in Dr. Dave’s report, at the Blakey Ridge/Bank regroup IanW and I decided there was no great demand on our time and we’d continue onto Castleton as planned. We arrived at the cafe to find the faster element just finishing their lunch. A brief crossover chat and they were off, leaving the two of us to enjoy the glorious sunshine.

Dr. Dave had kindly given us a couple of pointers as to the best route back but I’m not entirely sure if we followed them or not. We headed towards Danby and then Ainthorpe and a nice little climb up New Way, over the summit and down to Rosedale. From Rosedale it was the standard route to Castle Howard Drive via Appleton-le-Moors, Barton-le-Street and Slingsby. We had one minor navigational error when we continued a few hundred metres onto Brawby instead of turning right but soon realised our mistake. Not exactly sure why but from Castle Howard Drive I decided to head back via Terrington while IanW tried Bulmer.

An interesting ride, given the various splits and mechanical issues, I felt fortunate to have 115 trouble-free miles on the Garmin when I reached home, still feeling pretty good apart from a slightly red face where the suntan cream had washed off in the morning drizzle. Thanks to Dr. Dave for choosing the route and more especially to Ian for his company on the afternoon leg.

David, you forgot to mention that Duncan did it in the absolutely, stupidly fast time of 3:40:46, which would be a very strong new record in most clubs - it's only thanks to a certain Mr Graves that it isn't the case here.

Congratulations Duncan! Just one request though: when you get this year's club trophy, pretend not to notice the inscription on it from a couple of years back, with my name next to an embarrassingly slow time.

Thank you very much for the kind words. It should also be mentioned that two Cliftonites went under 20 minutes in a 10 this weekend. Eugene Cross did a 19.05 and Stephen Wood a 19.31 on the V718. Congratulations to you both.

Well done Duncan, Eugene and Stephen great TT results.

After the split at Helmsley described by Dr Dave 6 of us went on ahead to Castleton, John Green, Pete S, Simon, Fin, Jen, and myself making good progress through the mist and eventually into the sunshine making the climb up Blakey Bank quite a warm one then descending at full throttle to the cafe which by then was most welcome and nice to sit in the sunshine outside, Craig and Ian arrived and told us that due to some mechanicals etc the rest would be heading for the cafe at Rosedale.

Leaving Craig and Ian to order their meals we set off confident that at least one of us would remember the way to Rosedale via Danby or somewhere to the right, well after a wrong turn or two (that's all I'm saying) ha ha, we eventually found the long accent over the moor and down to Rosedale, just before Amotherby Fin and Jenny said they would make their own way from there and we continued to head home via Castle Howard then John dropped his chain as he started to climb towards the roundabout I waited for a while but he was obviously having problems with it so I rolled back down to him to see the chain had twisted quite badly when it had jammed on the inside and would not straighten at all so a few links were removed and fitted a quick link and we were then able to continue home, by the time I got in I didn't have much left in me at all and struggled to drink my beer.

Yes those TT times look impressive .. no time for a cafe stop then well done.

Well Saturday riders I think we have the secret on Sundays to smaller groups I am not sure what it is so I can not share it with you.
Just Arnie and myself this week. We both had plenty of opportunity to chat and found out we were both in the Bilset Stadium in Oslo in 1981 on the same night to see Seb Coe brake the 1000m world record. What are the chances of that ?
The interesting part of the ride was past Ripon - Galphay, Grewelthorpe, High Bramley back to Kerby Malzeard, Leverton over the moor to Pateley Bridge taking it steady on the tricky decent into the town where we had a cafe stop. Very quiet this section great views without the grunt over the very big hills. Give it a try if you have not been out that way. Plenty of other side roads to ride too if you have the time.
We took the kindest roads I could find out of Pateley. As both Arnie and I had rode in from Different directions we split at Linton on Ouse. Thanks Arnie I very much enjoyed my day out with you I did about 113 miles and I should think you got about the same. If you had Joined us from York I guess it would have been about 90 miles.

Just a call for next week. One of the most assessable if not the most assessable Sunday challenge rides to Stokesley. Pasta and Pudding at an Italian cafe in the town, home via Carlton Bank and Bilsdale. If it helps 100 mile event with a great feed station and challenging hilly section. Last years entrants gave it a 10 out of 10

More info to follow at the end of the week from our leader.

I cycled out to Easingwold do the 100km Mother Shipton Audax. A very enjoyable ride with two cafe stops in Knaresborough and Ripon. I particularly enjoyed the hilly section from Ripley to Ripon via Kirkby Malzeard.

The wind started to blow in my face for the final section of the ride from Boroughbridge to Easingwold, and my ride home, but I managed to get home before the heavens opened.

100 miles for the day.

Is Eugene still a junior? If so, isn't that the second fastest junior 10 ever?
