SPOCO 25 June 2015

Post by dave c »

We have 3 marshals, Sam, Shaun, Nigel plus Bernard timekeeping for this Thursday's event which is the Coneysthorpe course starting from Sheriff Hutton so could do with 1 more marshal please. If someone can help please post here and/or spreadsheet also.

Bernard has unfortunately had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances so we really need an other marshal at least now, any takers will be very welcome.

Hello all,

Unless I'm mistaken, the route for the 25th June involves going down Terrington bank? Just went past it today and it's covered in loose chippings (more like gravel than just chippings!) due to resurfacing. Will this affect the route for tomorrow's racing and if so, what are the chances of choosing another route that would be unaffected?

Thanks, Thomas.

If its been surface dressed then unless they are sweeping it like mad today its not really going to be safe to race down in my view.

It would be good if anyone local can get down and have a look?

We can, if we need to, change the course at short notice without consent if it is for safety reasons, which i think this would be, and given the other courses are regularly used and providing we do an on the day risk assessment we could use either the flat 10 or the brandsby loop?

That means the event can go ahead,

Taking into account the above posts Dave Cook has just inspected the Terrington Bank and the turn off before also the T junction before Terrington and our opinion is that the course is too dangerous to race on and will now be cancelled this is dissapointing news but the safety of our cyclists has to be our priority.

The only other course which could have been used would have been the Whenby circuit but it's too late due to having to submit and obtain permission from the police and or the nessasary cycling body who approves the TT.

Dave is going to be there for any who turn up tonight who has not had chance to read this, I will now see if I can contact the right person at the club to maybe get a notification email out to members but can't guarantee this at this late notice.

Just re read Sharpy,s post above where you say it could be changed without having to seek permission first this may be correct Richard but am not sure of this fact, I think I recall hearing before once that it was too late to obtain permission so that's all we can go on at this late hour.

Its in the Regs on the CTT site,

"The course, date or time of start shall not be altered without the consent of the District Committee(s) except in the interests of safety."

Cheers

edit: If it was being changed on a whim then I would agree or in the case of the day we had clashing events that would not fall into this really as it was just bad planning / comms, but as there is a genuine justification it would not seem unreasonable.

Ultimately though whatever the CTT District Committee says, approval of the events has to come from the Police (I know this since I'd been doing the annual bellyaching notifications up until last year!) and unless David can check with our contact at Police HQ and get approval for the change, then it shouldn't go ahead.

Fair enough.

Do we need to look at the other events with a view to contingency? There seems to be a lot of this surface dressing going down at the moment and it would seem a shame if we had cancel more because of it.

Just ridden the course and there is also dressing loose chippings all the way up through Ganthorpe, hopefully should be ok before next week. David Short may have some suggestions on his return next week re contingencies.

Cheers

Hi all!

I have sent a quickly composed e-mail, stating that tonight's event is cancelled, to the recipients who normally get our weekly e-mail. This will also have gone to our Facebook Page and Twitter Feed.

Apologies if the e-mail appears a bit rough and ready but I was in a meeting at work.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,

Craig

Looking at the weather forecast maybe it's not such a bad thing to cancel :?
Thanks to all the would be organisers and helpers and hope the surface dressing has bedded in OK for next week.

Ah ha! just found an interweb connection in the bar of the local pub! Picking up on this discussion I am grateful for Phil's intervention. TT's are governed by statute so I'm afraid we can't just pick and choose our routes without statutory notification to the police. We can make changes within the period we need to give notice to the CTT 'in the event of emergencies'. Basically we have to give min of 28 days notice to police and 42 days notice to CTT. It's the 42 days notice which can be waived subject to Bob Tate's approval.

I'm back next week so we can discuss tagging a further event on the end of the series, no problem. Good call to cancel, well done! Better be safe to ride another day.

Do we have a volunteer to organise next week? Nag over, back to hols, winching the tandem over some silly hills, Buttertubs, Kidstones etc!! :D :D

Cheers David
