Just had a look at the manual. Its says "the total work done over the course of the trip is shown in kilojoules. This value is a measure of the total energy expended over the course of your ride. This is roughly equivalent to dietary calories expended"
So maybe it really means 4600 calories which seems about right.

Steve - take kj = dietary calories to replace.
It works like this: kj/kcal ration ~ 4/1. A human cycling is ~25% efficient. So he two factors cancel out and rougly kj burned = (k)cal you need to eat.
To work it out exactly you need to have your pedalling efficiency measured, but this is near enough.
