Weekend round up 14/15 Feb

Post by dave c »

'A' ride for me this week, 10 set off, Dr Dave, Simon, Jon g, John, Graham, Ian H, Fin, Jen, Tony and me. A great route by Dr Dave to Leyburn via Aldwark, Boroughbridge, Sharow, Wath, West Tanfield, Thornton Steward and onto the Posthorn for a nice cafe stop. The weather was mild in comparison to previous weeks and we returned via Bedale, Kirklington, Catton, Topcliffe, Helperby and back home. 104 miles for me and pretty tired but a great day, thanks to all.

Cheers

Success! Following the puncturefest last week, I managed to get a full Club ride in on Saturday.

Nine of us (Kevin, MarkB, Nick, Dawn, Steve, Tony, Mark, Ian and myself) on the “K” ride and a trip into the Wolds incorporating Buttercrambe, Bugthorpe, Kirby Underdale and Thixendale. Some “pleasant” little climbs amongst that lot and always a bit of a test with winter bikes and a few layers on. Weather was a little dreich on the higher parts and there wasn’t a lot of scenery on show.

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced so much mud on the roads and I was caked in the stuff by the time we reached the lunch stop at Millington. The cafe was pretty full and unable to accommodate us all initially and I was also slightly reluctant to sit inside covered in so much mud. So Kevin, still suffering a bit from being properly chilled while waiting for my puncture repairs the previous week, MarkB and myself decided to carry on without stopping.

Usual return route, dropping MarkB at home in Stamford Bridge, and Kevin and I were back in York for about 2:30pm with plenty of time left to clean the bike for the second time that day. A testing little ride of just under 60 miles door to door.

As Dave has posted a good ride on Saturday. Grey but dry and not too cold. Roads muddy though - brakes wearing rims down at a rate of knots (unless you have discs a-la Dr Joe :D ). First 100 mile ride of the year - must be doing me some good?
Keep pedalling!

Four of us for the 08:45. One alarm clock requiring new batteries (Mark) and Strava KOMs for me in order to get to the Square on the strike of 08:45 meant that we left a few minutes late.

Out to Thixendale via Claxton, Bossal and Leavening. First ride in a while for Gerard who was pulling the old Lance Armstrong trick of claiming to be “off-form” and then leaving everyone for dust on the climbs. Nice little sprint through the valley to Thixendale before climbing back out to Malton and up Castle Howard drive.

Gerard’s knee started to show signs that he had been away for too many weeks, or that he was going up the hills too fast for this time of year, so it was a gentle ride back into town through Thornton-le-clay. Just over 60 miles for me and home by 12:30 as planned.

Strong westerly forecast for next weekend, so likely to head out past Wetherby if the rain holds off.

Impressed with the A ride 100 mile ride this week Dr Dave must have some big plans for you all this year.

Sunday we had 9 takers MarkD,Eric, Ed, Andrew not Graham, Nigel, Shaun, AndyG, Broomwagon, and self. All old faces to Sundays some we were welcoming back after sometime in the wilderness.
Cockayne clockwise gave us an 80 mile ride at a good pace. We kept together well on the flat and gave each other the usual panting space on the hills. Not bright weather out on the moors. Still snow on the hills and verges from the dump they had two weeks ago.
Cafe at the Penny Bank in Kirbymoorside. I can report good coffee very good food but we arrived at a busy time so service was slow for some. It seems they gave priority to the good looking ones as Mark and I had no problems. Possibly worth a try again with a smaller group. ( or better looking at least)
AndyG was faultless with his directions. Enjoyed the day
We are back to normal service next week with Rob. Osmotherley I think was the plan.

Excellent ride on Saturday with the A group to Leyburn. Not been there since Le Tour and not a place ive been on a Saturday ride before either apart when ive done the Tan hill ride in August. Thankfully not the hilliest of rides due to the distance but a good route devised by Dr Dave. extremely muddy roads and the extra weight carried on the bike must make a difference  not to mention the extra wear and tear on the components. it doesn't bear thinking about when you can hear the grinding on the rims and chain. the bucket of water was black after id cleaned the bike. I will be glad when spring arrives :D. D to D a whopping 130 miles for me so a pretty long ride for February. It does wonders for your endurance this cycling. As always ill thank everybody for the tow most of the time as we stayed together pretty well as a group with no issues :D

Sounds like i missed one hell of a ride last weekend, Dave C 130 miler has to be one of the first ones this year ''Hats off to you Sir !!''

Sadly i won't be out for the next two weekends as i am away, i am sure the routes will be flat as usual and upon my return on 7th of March it'll be all Hilly again ....... compliments of Dr Dave am sure. :D

Keep those wheels turning, not long now before the 2015 summer begins and the BIG bikes are out again !! then all those winter miles will pay dividend to what i believe will be one of the best years of cycling yet ( for me at least !)
