Weekend roundup 09/11/14
I did the "keep it growing" Movember ride http://www.sports-lab.co.uk/ a 57 mile challenge ride starting from Brantingham near South Cave which despite the weather I really enjoyed. I guess this is quite an easy route really with some drags (which never get that steep) and then a flat second half but it was getting demanding at the end owing to the persistent head wind and heavy rain. Returning to my grumpy old man - cycling's not as good as it used to be - theme, whilst there was a selection of expensive machinery and deep section carbon wheels given the weather forecast mudguards were very much in the minority. Good in one way I suppose as it encouraged me to do less wheel sucking, but I still ended up with plenty of Belgium toothpaste and having to pocket my cycling glasses as I couldn't see a bloomin thing. Regardless I really enjoyed the day and would recommend this ride next year. And what with the ride to the HQ and back I clocked the 100, it's been a while since I've done that.

.... the moustache would go well with the Grumpy Old Man image, Broomy. Well done on the ride too.
Fabulous Sunday Clubrun today. Autumnal Yorkshire in all its glory! Really quiet lanes all day.
There was mist clinging to the climb of Chimney Bank and the shapes in the gloom above me were of Will out-duking Eric for the mountain points. But we climbed out of the murk as we rounded the top bend. I pulled over for a photo and watched all the cloud just peel away from the slopes - what a view!
After some reticent service in H-le-H cafe we were off again via Surprise View. The ford at St Gregory's Minster was in spate, so we opted for the footbridge..... 3 riders skidded into a heap on the wet planks. Great opportunity to teach our American comrade the true meaning of the word "irony"!
Back home just after 3, with 80 of some of the best miles of the year on the clock. Thanks for company and quality conversation - you don't get to discuss iso-elastic rebound in many cycling clubs
Cockayne next week. See you then.

Re: Weekend roundup 09/11/14
I set off Saturday morning not really expecting a lot to be in the square at 10am. I was kind of right. There were a few joining Bernard and only 5 of us setting off on the A ride, me , matt, Kevin n, kevin, and Graham,. With the forecast for rain quite early we decide to do a non stop loop with the knowledge that we weren't thatvfar from home if the weather deteriated. We devised a route of a about 50 ish miles around roads south of york. Known to me quite well but not frequented by many from Clifton ( probably for good reason
) not the most inspiring route but the flat terrain meant we could stick together well and cover the miles quickly. The forecast cast was right and we spent most of the ride wet and cold . I don't mind wet and muddy roads as long is not raining as well that's whats makes it doubly miserable. Enough of me moaning about the weather. The ride itself was quite good in and served a purpose., despite my p*****e early on caused by a great big thorn stuck in the tyre causing a irritating clicking sound on the mudguard.we'd covered about 40 miles from york when I departed towards selby, the rest of the group headed back through cawood and Naburn back to york. I was back home for about 1'o clock and with my feet up trying to get warm and dry. Hope the rest of you got back ok. It made a change to ride roads not usually used . We did find some quiet ones. At least I didnt have a long ride home
I must admit though I do prefer the roads North of York, the reason I make the effort to get there
May be next week we could make it ripley or maybe millington.

As Mike has posted in the other thread the '8:45 at 9' ride was a contrast between a sunny outward ride over Galley Gap to Thixendale via Leavening Bank, and a driving rain/Belgian toothpaste drench-fest back via Melbourne and Escrick.
[Broomy mode] Just about managed to hold the wheel apart from on the hills so thanks to all for waiting when necessary - the diet starts tomorrow [/Broomy mode]

I was on the Wirral this weekend so I sent an email to my friend at Port Sunlight Wheelers and joined their 9.30 ride from the historic Eureka Cafe at Two Mills, 6 miles north of Chester. 50 miles around the lanes of Cheshire later I was back in Eureka for lunch. About 20 riders in the group and about 50:50 male female mix. Average speed just under 15mph.
Great ride, great fun, and great company in the cafe afterwards discussing all things cycling. I strongly advise club members to do this themselves when away from the fold. I have contacted and ridden with three clubs in this way (Taule in Brittany, Phoenix in Belfast for the Giro, and now PSW on the Wirral). It beats riding by yourself, you get a free guide on roads you don't normally ride, and you make new friends to return to with the bike. I'm off top Spain in March and will be doing the same over there too.
Next week York!
