Top dressings to roads

Just signed this e petition maybe some of you feel as strongly as I do about this dangerous cost cutting method of road surfacing.

Just signed this. Just come back from a 4 hour ride upto Hawnby and back through Helmsley. Took the right turn at the top of Hawnby village signposted Laiskill. From the junction this road and the road north to Osmotherley have just been surface dressed. Although road closed signs were still out the work was finished and the road was open. I had to walk down the hill and up the 1 in 3 bit after the bridge - the road was completely unrideable with piles and lines of loose chippings all over the road which continues for a couple of miles upto the juntion with the Stokesley road. I would recommend avoiding this stretch for about the next year! I maybe incorrect but I thought the argument in favour of this treatment was that car tyres would compress the chippings into the tar. But this stretch of road gets literally about 2 cars an hour! I was up there a few weeks back and dont recall any problem with the road surface.
I came back today through Slingsby and along the Castle Howard road where the surface dressing has come away with rough stretches and potholes all the way along. It just doesnt work.
I see the Flaxton Moor road has just been repaired with proper tarmac - its now the best bit on that road!

I've signed it. Got a p on Haxby to Towthorpe road and got splattered with chippings as I changed the tube by cars flying past too fast(another issue). The road Strensall to Flaxton has been repaired but they've left some rough bits plus they haven't sealed the gaps. There will be some more bad bits in a few months. Why can't they just resurface the whole road like they used to do, cheaper in the long run.

Um.....I'm not particularly taking sides here but there are always two sides to everything. Surface dressing is three to four times cheaper than other surfaces such as hot rolled asphalt. It covers approx 75% of the road network. It lasts well and we don't worry about it on our riding unless it's worn out or new. If you did get your way and we use the more costly alternatives we would have to pay for it either through an increase in taxation or a cut in funding of other services. We're talking billions.

Again I'm not taking sides but everything costs.
