Weekend roundup 16/17 August

Post by IanH »

Rode the Dr Dave's "Into The West" challenge ride Saturday, 6 of us in the square for the 8am start (Andrew with the beard), Andrew G, John B, Tim J Dr Dave and I, quite a headwind on the journey out as we kept a tidy group together with each taking their turn up front heading out through Masham, Leyburn (where Tim decided to turn for home not having the mileage in his legs as he had just returned from a 2 week family holiday), through Redmire then a short break for refreshments in the little café at Askrigg, (quite a place for a wide range of coffees), then onward still into the wind to Hawes with the left turn up over Fleet Moss, its a few years since I have done this climb with its false top then about the same steep gradient to meet you again to the summit which was quite cold in the damp with what seemed like light drizzle.

Once over the top it was fun time flying along the valley with the ever increasing tailwind and soon made it to Grassington for our long awaited lunch stop then returning home through Burnsall, Bolton Abbey, Ilkley, Otley and Wetherby with 140 miles at 17mph average on the clock.

Thanks to Dr Dave for organising the ride and to the good company of the other guys, the red wine really went down well once home

As Ian has said a good ride with the wind providing the dominant theme for the day. I'd conceived this ride as the mirror image of the Tan Hill ride - turning left at Hawes instead of right. Overall I think the route worked OK albeit that the wind rather defines it when it's as strong as if was. Maybe next year I'll look at other options for roads less frequented on our 'trade routes'.......
Keep pedalling!

Thanks for the ride Dave.I would have carried on with u but gambling that far out is probably not the way to go.Anyway still managed 105 miles(not quite 140 eh Ian :D ) myself albiet without the climb which is a fair lot further than i have been doing.Bit miffed i missed out on the tailwind with u lot and felt ok when i got back so maybe there were a few more in there!Cheers for the ride.

Sounds like a great dales ride guys, pity I couldn't do it, other things on Saturday.

Did Cleveland hilly 25 tt on Sunday morning over the moors from Castleton to Hutton le Hole and back to Castleton. I love riding over that road and doing a time trial with a 20 mph side wind made it even more exciting and challenging!!. Exciting going down towards Hutton and back down to Castleton downhill on the tri bars! 11th out of 27 and 5th on handicap so fairly happy. Well done to Dominic who was the only other Clifton rider.

Cheers

The York 100 once again for me in what were possibly the windiest conditions I've ever ridden in!

It's the first time I've seen group riding as an absolute necessity just to make any progress at all on the way back. I think finding a group that worked well is the only reason I managed to finish at all!

115 miles door to door and a top half finish. Very happy with that.

Roll on The RAB in 2 weeks!

Regards to all
