weekend roundup 28/29th

Post by Rob »

Fabulous sunday ride. Just self and Andy. The rest of you missed Boltby Bank, the Hawnby Road to Osmotherley. Then back via felixkirk, Kilburn, and the lane through the hedge.... 90 hilly miles door to door and home in time for the last 2 laps of the worlds RR. Perfect Sunday?

At least 2 riders in 3 peaks cross.......

Now in post season R&R mood but had to be back by Saturday lunchtime (due to a planned expedition in search of new specs frames - a modern day equivalent of those paintings of demons poking you with toasting forks) so missed the Kev ride in favour of the 08:45 departure. Slightly alarmingly this departed in the opposite direction and took off to Westow and Thixendale, but was well marshalled by Tony. A big group - with a couple of others from the racing squad in there - stuck together well and some wonderful countryside and little-explored roads under blue skies. A Good Morning.

Joined Phil and Tim as guests of the 8.45 ride on Saturday. Under strict instructions from Phil to behave ourselves, he needn't have worried as the large group included some really strong riders who had no compunction about tearing it up on the climbs.

A great route, well led by Tony, along some really quiet lanes. With warm sunshine it was a great morning out, and with just a shade under 65 miles door to door it hit the spot perfectly. It was a pleasure to meet some new faces and explore (to me) some new roads.

Hope to be out next Saturday as Tony dangled the carrot of Brimham Rocks next week.

Yet another great outing on the 8.45 ride.was good to see some race lads there.a good strong group and tidy'ish riding.split from the group near Stockton and headed back with Tim where a 2 up took place until he almost ground my legs to a halt.but good fun.75 miles for me at an ave of a tad over 18mph.

Having been off the bike properly for several weeks for health reasons, I'm trying to ease myself back to some shape again.

We were camping in Settle Sat night in prep for 'a little fun run' on Sun so I did a solo ride from York to Settle. Wonderful day to be on a bike with clear skies, still some warmth in the sun and the gentlest of tailwinds for company. Spofforth, Beckwithshaw, Fewston, Greenhow, Appletreewick, Hetton, Airton, Settle - just shy of 70 miles, all at a gentle touring pace, but the last hill didn't come soon enough.

Sunday I was spectating(/recovering)at the 3 Peaks Cyclo Cross. For those that are unfamiliar it's a slightly mad event which is a sort of 38 mile fell run, but carrying a bike on the way round the 3 peaks. Just to make it more interesting you're not allowed anything appropriate like a MTB or straight handlebars and have to do the whole event clinging on for dear life on a modified road bike. Well done to 2 Clifton ladies; Heather and Gill for competing and completing it.

Spent most of Saturday dressed as Paddington in Tesco's on Tadcaster Road. En-route I saw Craig on the Iron Bridge on his way to the 10am ride. Opened the window of the car to shout encouragement but I think he just thought I was some other nutter motorist complaining about bikes and ignored me! Collected £216 for Action Medical Research as Paddington in preparation for L'eroica next week. I'm now a hare's whisker off £10,000 for the 3 years of collecting. Got back at 4pm, the weather was just too good to miss so out on the bike on a 26 mile training loop I do. Fastest ever time too. Note to self: Always prepare for a ride by being dressed as a bear for 5 hours.

Sunday I took the 1954 Carpenter on its last road test before Chianti. 68 mile lumpy trip to Helmsley and back. Dressed in full regalia, water bottle on the handlebars, tools in the saddle bag, and pockets full to the brim. Even though I was out on my own it has to go down as one of the best rides of the year. What a lovely day. Only hairy moment was coming into Helmsley with a cross-wind.

Got home to see the final throws of the World's. I hope the weather is better next Sunday in Italy......

Well as Tullio said I did the 3 Peaks Cyclocross, in my opinion after yesterday the best race ever!! It was the hardest thing I have ever done. the wind was brutal, I was blown off my bike twice on Whernside and when my bike was on my shoulder it just kept trying to fly away.
The support round the course was amazing and the 2 Clifton marshalls were fantastic, thank you! Melly were you the gate holder or the guy giving me the good line down the grass?
I was so please to get round and finish.
Never again!
Heather was the other Clifton rider who passed me coming down Pen y Ghent when I was crawling up........she made it look so easy and was the 8th Female. Well done Heather!!!

Well done girls, yes Gill C I was the 1st gate guardian and the one "offering" the alternative line to those willing to listen ;-), and it was Reuben at the next gate. Our reward/punishment for marshalling is guaranteed entry into next years race, the training has begun!!!

Had my first ride with the club since my accident in June, went on Kevin's ride to Thorton le Dale along with about 15 others and it was nice to meet a few who were new to me.

Really enjoyed the ride and was more than happy with how I felt.

A big thank you to Kevin and the other riders for a good day out.

Great to hear you're back on the bike, Ian :)

No riding for me over the weekend - mine consisted of travelling as I came back from my 'holiday' in France and then headed back to Sheffield for uni. In France, though, I was riding my bike in the Pyrenees for 11 days, doing a little challenge ride called the Rapha Cent Cols Challenge. There will be a full write-up in the Clitonite for those interested to know more :)
