Speedplay Pedals

Post by Allan »

I am a bit disappointed with the quality/longevity of my current Look Keo's.
Have been looking at the Speedplay Zero pedals - anybody had any experience with these?

Hi Allan

I have been using them for several years now and really like them, they are double entry so you just press your foot down without having to check how your pedal is aligned which is great in built up areas moving off from the lights etc.
the down side is the cleats are not cheap with the mechanism being on the shoe not the pedal however they should not need replacing too often, I have just put new ones on after several years but look after them using the cleat covers (which are extra) about a tenner each time you get off the bike to walk at cafe's etc.

There's a rather interesting post lower down which Dr Dave posted about the company but this in no way reflects the quality of their products.

Allan, I had never used anything else but Keo's on the road, but was swayed by a couple of friendly local bike fit gentlemen (Fraz & Sam) and swapped over to the Speedplay Zero's 2 weeks ago, 1st experiences were that they were harder to clip into, but 2 weeks later and more mileage, its not the pedal, its me, its not a Keo therefore it doesnt work quite like one and you learn a slightly different technique. not having to look down is fabulous, the facility to set your own level of float from 0-15` is unique on this pedal and that includes the direction of the float meaning you can prevent the inside of your shoe rubbing the cranks or those expensive rear carbon stays!!!!!. More effort is required with the cleat house keeping and as Ian advises, the cleat covers are an essential additional cost. Love the new system, the feel, the build quality, the crisp mechanism ete etc, I wont be changing back to Keo`s, in fact ive sold them and my stock of crap plastic cleats!!!. I have no connection with Cycle Works other than as a happy customer. Another tip from a mate who has used them for some time is to alternate the foot you clip out of every time you stop to even out the wear.

Another thing worth noting with Speedplay is that you must get them lubed up every month or two, otherwise the bearings will die a horrible, grinding death, and they're very expensive to replace, unless you buy them from somewhere without a Speedplay label.

Similarly, every couple of weeks put a little dry lube on the cleat springs to keep them releasing easily, otherwise they become stiff and difficult to release.

Also, as Melly says, when new they are difficult to clip in, but they become much easier after they bed-in.

I love my Speedplays, but the only other experience I've had was with Look Keo Easy (cheapest Look in the line-up) before them.

Couldn't in all conscience buy from anyone with such unethical business practice:

Andy, its very easy to do the greasing yourself, I bought official speedplay grease from Wiggle and a cheap (£3.25) grease gun from ebay or simply use a small medical syringe inject a few CC, after removing the greasing port screw, greased every month these pedals will last for many many miles and your superb warranty covers anything else. Ive also had various Keo's, including the very best Blade Titanium Contadors, after Sam got me the 3rd set replaced under warranty, I gave up and moved on !!!!
