Weekend Roundup 2nd / 3rd March

Post by Darren N »

What a great day yesterday – Sun and clear skies! – Woohoooo!! The Inters normally get kicked out of the Square first so that the remaining K-Riders can be split appropriately. Well, when we clipped in and headed out, we almost cleaned out the Square! - there were 17 of us,…that’s right, SEVENTEEN!! And the day had everything…good AND bad. I’ll try a role call: John C, Dr Dave, Ian H, Dave C, Fin, Jen, Stu, Tony, Shaun W, Karl, Simon W, Aussie Julian, Kiwi Matt, Neil, Dave, Jon G and myself.

Everyone was feeling chirpy on the way out, lots of blue sky above and plenty of banter. Near Bossall, we were riding along a single lane in the wheel corridors when somehow in the middle of the peloton, Dave hit a rock as big as a Paris-Roubaix cobble and went down hard, smashing his right elbow. After calling an ambulance, a paramedic turned up on his motorbike with lights flashing and said the ambulance was only a few minutes behind. It was very bad luck for Dave and we all wish him a quick recovery. It would be nice to hear some news of current well-being.

Then followed a long slog through some very fresh tarmac, leaving 32 wheel impressions in front of a guy in a bulldozer who suddenly had some extra work to do – he had waved us through btw. There were a few draggy bits further out before we hit the climb between North Grimston and Duggleby where everyone went into ‘batter-each other’ mode. Neil peeled off here as he was on an early one.

After Cowlam, we began what can only be described as an absolute hammerfest for the 5 mile sprint along the valley floor to Driffield. The pace was gi-normous, no prisoners taken - the best session I’ve had on a bike for ages! After a breather in Driffield, play resumed after lunch on the way back through Skerne and Huggate. Somewhere here, John had his own personal domestic dispute with his bike, a triple blow out and tyre failure – humour was only restored when someone mimed a tyre puncture noise behind John soon after we got going.

All this standing around kept the spinters fresh and in the game (I wrote that for Stu’s benefit ;)). We repeated the Driffield hammerfest through the valley at Millington pastures before literally sprinting for every village sign thereafter. Stu was a clear winner of the green jersey but he didn’t have it all his own way, with a growing posse of snipers joining in to rob him. At one point when I was on the front with Dave C, I wondered aloud where Stu was. I then heard ‘Here!’ as Stu seemed to jump out of my left armpit and motor away. My massive attempt to chase lasted about two pedal revolutions before the simple message came up from the engine room below: “Nope”.

Just short of Stockton Lane on a wide road, a psycho-idiot pulled in behind us in a horse box and left his hand on his horn for minutes. When he got around us, he slammed on his brakes in front of us – I think this sort of thing verges on a reportable incident to the Police tbh. We then hit our second lot of fresh tarmac in Stockton Lane – two in one day!…unheard of.

The day had its low points, as described, but some huge high points as well – probably the best fun I’ve had on a bike for a long time. Everyone knew what they were doing and joined in the spirit of the day – it was sensational! Big thanks to everyone for an enjoyable day out…and hope Dave gets better quickly.

I can’t come out on the next two Saturdays due to family commitments so enjoy yourselves!

:)

D.

PS. I had some members ask me yesterday whether the Clifton Road Challenge Series will be conducted this year because nothing has been published – I presumed it would be but this is more a question for Bernard? Rob? At the very least, if the Fountains Monk’y business Audax held on Sunday 24th March 2013 is included in the series, entries are due by 10th March, which is only a week away.

Hope Davids injury is not too serious hope to see him out as soon as. After my puncturefest on Saturday had a drive out to retreive the offending brand new tyre which I had thrown in the ditch in disgust only to find somebody had moved it.
Thanks to all who helped and Tony for the tyre. Still think Continentals are good but this one was certainly a rogue!!

Good write up by Darren as usual - someone will need to deputise for the next 2 weeks - not sure any of us are up to the task of maintaining such a high standard.

Also hope Dave is OK - such a shame. Any news?

Had a lovely ride on Friday from York to Chesterfield via the Sunstrans TPT Network. I first went on Sustrans Route 65 down to Selby. Then on route 62 to Brampton near Barnsley, followed by Route 67 to Chesterfield. I did rather add a bit of distance near Ecclesfield and then as I was running out of light decided to cut directly across from Sheffield Airport to Chesterfield. This was probably a bit of a mistake as anyone who knows Sheffield, knows it is a built on a series of Hills. I therefore ended up going up and down continually over a series of ridges going in the direction of Ridgeway and Marsh Lane. I did around 90 miles on my trekking bike in about 9 hours. The way to Doncaster is relatively fast (and flat, but occasionally muddy!) and I probably averaged about 12 miles an hour. After that mud, anti motorcycle gates, road crossings, rush hour traffic and navigation (especially around Meadowhall or Meadowhell as we call it) really slowed me down. Arrived just in time for a quick shower and dinner at my parents house.

Yes, another great write up as usual Darren, super day out in the sun apart from Dave's crash resulting in what looked like a very painful injury, hope you soon get over it and back on the bike.

Thanks for the company guys and help in allowing me to catch up after the climbs.

The Sunday crew got slightly less appealing day weather wise, but can't complain really. The chain-stay on my Airborne is currently cracking like the ice does in the Ice-Age films... so was out on summer bike. Left the overshoes behind as well which always makes you feel good...

Thanks for the company chaps: Dr Joe, Broomy, Andrew (the rider formerly known as Graham  ) Ian and Steen.

Howsham, Leavening, Settringham Bank. Dry roads, but very gritty and potholes you'd need a rope to get out of. West Lutton and on down towards Grindale. "Roads are looking a bit greasy" say Broomy approaching Grindale, and within seconds down goes Dr Joe, taking Broomy with him. DJ did the decent think and cushioned Broomy's fall... I always think its useful to have a medic on the ride, but ideally they shouldn't be the one to crash and I was a little worried as Joe took a few minutes to get up. Still, we dusted him down, straighten up his bike and got him moving again. A cup of tea in the cafe having its usual restorative powers!

Had a quick look at the cold grey N Sea, then headed back via Kilham, Langtoft, Sledmere, Wetwang and Millington.

102 miles door to door for me. Further for those the other side of York, still further for Broomy riding in from Elvington and as for Steen riding in from Thirsk.....  Personal Furthests (PFs) recorded for at least two of the group and well done to Joe for getting up before the count and keeping at it. Great ride.

Langdale End next week.

What a ride !! i was rather anxious as i haven't been out on the Club runs for a few weeks. but Rob and Steve were brilliant all the way through(even though i did drag Steve down with me !)
Hurt my left hip and knee(the right knee and right hip having just recovered from the icy incident at Joe's corner a few weeks earlier !! not much damage, just my pride, my tights and my NEW rear wheel is slightly out of true

But all in all it was a wonderful ride, i'd say one of the best i have ever had (in my 8 month cycling career ) and at 109.25 miles door to door my FIRST CENTURY TOO !! :D, the only downside is the coffee in bridlington !! note to self; next time have tea !!

Although i was slower than everyone; i'd like to believe that everyone else in the ride wasn't too upset, as not only was i the bearer of the SLOW UPHILL torch for the day; i gave everyone a couple of minutes rest at the top of nearly every big hill too

Thanks to everyone for making the day a really enjoyable one.

P.S Darren; it was lovely meeting you last Saturday and i must say your running commentary on the rides are always a Joy to read. Dr Dave; i am sorry about the rear Mud Guard last Saturday, believe me i know the feeling and felt rather guilty about it too. Glad you guys had a lovely ride on the 2nd and i wish Dave a Speedy recovery.

Regards
Joe

Six hundred and seventy two hours off the pace but reliabilty route completed! An achingly dull monochromatic day with the vibrant colour of battleship drab with a charisma bypass - but at last some decent miles in the legs.
Sorry to hear of the slips, spills and tumbles - hope all recover without any long term damage.

Excellent ride on Saturday. My first proper club ride of 2013 other than the Reliability ride. Ominous start with the crash and all. Good to hear your ok,I wish you a speedy recovery Dave. It was the usual struggle on the hills though and felt abit overdressed with the pleasant sunshine. Good group to ride with plenty of experience amongst them. Also thinking of ditching the gator skins  after Johns nightmare day but at least it broke up the drag up that climb from Tibthorpe which meant everybody stuck together. Thankfully made it backin daylight as I only had emergency lights to make me seen and not good enough to see with. Didn't need them though. It was a bit chilly cycling back as well the temperature dropped about 5 degrees on my garmin after leaving York.

Hope to be back out again soon.
