Weekend Roundup 18/19/20th

Post by Rob »

Thanks to all the dinner organisers, nice evening. Slides of summer touring make me feel very wistful.....

Despite more warnings of a meteorological apocalypse on the radio this morning ( ) there were 6 takers for the Sunday clubrun. Took the winter conditions route out via Holtby and the A166, then up Galley Gap to Malton, then A169 and right turn to Thornton le Dale. Absolutely no ice and some roads even dry(ish). Not much traffic either.

Quick cafe stop and back via Kirkby Misperton and Castle Howard. 60 odd miles at a nice even pace, and rather more pleasant than staring at a garage wall for an hour. Thanks for the company chaps.

Helmesley direction next week.

Just missed you at the square having only decided at 8.30 to have a pedal after a walking visit to Millington on Saturday.
So thinking that I might see you on Lawrence st before you headed out towards Stamford Bridge I headed in that direction, but then when I didn't see anyone I decided to head south to Howden via Elvington etc and stick to roads that I expected would be OK.
Which proved correct, so after a Hot chocolate to warm me up at the garden centre on the A614 ( at 10.45 and 25 miles), I then headed west towards Goole before making for Snaith and then to the Two Hoots garden centre at Carlton with 37 miles done. ( only saw 2 cyclists from Hull - all day)
Then with the snow starting I headed straight towards Selby and then Wistow/Cawood/Stillingfleet/Naburn etc. A head wind from Cawood made it feel as if I was riding over the frozen Steppes of Siberia!!
After Naburn I decided thatnthe cycle path would be a bit slippery, so took the road route into York; and saw Dawn & Steve in Fulford who had been out for a long walk.
62 miles done and back home for 3.00 average 14.5 mph.
Who else managed to get out?

The cycle path was indeed a bit slippy, I went down as far as Pluto on the Saturday, using a studded tyre on the front. I wouldn't have liked to ride there without it - 'nuff said.

Firstly let me thank everyone involved with the club dinner on Friday, another good evening of entertainment.

I did manage a ride on Sunday. Didn't feel confident enough with the roads to go on the club run so stuck to some local lanes which I new were definitely gritted. Pretty cold wind though but felt ok once moving. Managed just over forty miles, longest ride since before Xmas. Am now just hoping there is a break in the weather for the reliability ride. I could do with a couple more longish rides though before that :)

33 Miles for me around Strensall, Sheriff Hutton, Huby and Haxby. I think we saw PaulM just outside of Haxby.

Cold on the hands, but the rest of me was fine!

Really need to give the bike a wash now..

I must admit I wimped out on Saturday and sat on the turbo for an hour and a half. Braved the Peak District for a break from revision on Sunday though - a nice 2.5 hours, 40 miles and 1050m climbing to keep the legs awake through the exam slog. Main roads out and back were clear, well gritted and well used, and only one of the roads I used, the Froggatt climb, was a little less so.

I woke this morning to find another 2.5-3inches of snow had been dumped over Sheffield so it was back to the turbo again today.

I presume it was you turning into Usher Lane Andy?
Had a plan to hook up with the Sunday ride on their way back from Thornton Le Dale but knew from the conditions that they would have to carefully plan their return leg and as ever Rob was thinking one step ahead. But ever the optimist I set out at midday in hope rather then expectation knowing they were supposed to be returning via Rillington and Settrington. So expecting the roads to be clear I headed out via Haxby, Flaxton, Foston, joined the A64 to the top of Whitwell and crossed on foot to head down into Kirkham. The last bit I dont recommend by the way!. By Settrington I had pretty much given up hope but climbed the bank which was ok on the way up but slushy over the top. But the road down to Thorpe Basset was covered in snow so I knew they werent coming that way & I was on my own now. I just stayed on the High Mowthorpe road which can only be described as passable with care as snow was drifting a bit in the wind, before the long decent to Weaverthorpe. I was glad to get onto the main road to warm up a bit & returned via Duggleby, Langton again and Buttercrambe. I was pleased with that as must have got in over 60 miles and back for half three.

Yes that was us! 2nd training ride for my group that's doing London 2 Paris in April.

Just signed up to do Coast 2 Coast in June over 1 day (150 miles, 4500m climbing)

I arrived 10 minutes late to the square only to find everyone had set off( lost track of time in the garage layering up) i saw Bernard as i passed the traffic light but by the time i had turned around to catch him he was gone ! no where to be found infact; i even cycled around the streets for a few mins but no joy :(

So i did a loop to malton and back via Stamford bridge, (road conditions were not as bad as i expected)
i was really looking forward to my second Sunday run ! Totally my fault though ...... note to oneself Dont be late on a Sunday !!
