Training ride, Saturday 17th
I won't be out on Saturday but, doubtless, lots of other people will be!
Suggested arrangements, based on last week and the feedback from it:-
- A ten-to-nine group which will be a "steadier" ride aimed at those new to it, the Go-Ride lads'n'lasses, and anyone who wants a marginally gentler pace. Reuben, are you okay fronting this up again as you did such a successful job last week?
- A nine o'clock group for everyone else - which again (at the risk of repeating myself) really should be pretty steady too at this time of year. If there's more than - ooo, I dunno, fifteen or so riders in this lot I'd recommend splitting it into two and make sure you put a good few minutes gap inbetween. Have we got a couple of regulars who are happy to take a lead and make sure things work in a tidy fashion?
If we're continuing in the clockwise points-of-the-compass routine, this week should be eastwards, which is York - Malton via the Buttercrambe road, Coneysthorpe, Terrington, then a loop of the Flat Ten circuit, then back to York. It's a lumpy route so even more of a challenge to get groups to work together, but a good one when it works.

Yes, happy to front up the 8:50am ride on Saturday. However, I am concerned that the easterly route may end up with the steadier group all over North Yorkshire as it always splits the bunch up. I love that route but I don't think it would be a sensible choice (yet). Steadier group should do it on next rotation though.
I would like to suggest that the 8:50am group does the same route as last week (maybe with the twist after Crayke via Sheriff Hutton that faster lot did) and then both groups re-convene on the southerly route the week after.

This is a worry, and I know it is putting a few people off as there seems to be a few that want a much faster ride, I guess we need to be considering that the ride needs to be steady so with that in mind I would not expect an average speed over 19mph given the hills it should be less than this.

I'm with Sharpy on this. If people want to head off into the distance then fair enough really, there are certainly a few who are more than happy to stick together and ride at a decent but steady pace.
Once we do get the 8:50 group doing the same route it seems more sensible to set off in the other order; so people can drop back into that group if needs be.
Does anyone have a GPS readout of Saturday's route so I can stick it on the Garmin?

I'd seriously suggest that the nine-o'clockers split into two groups, otherwise poor Reuben's going to end up with about forty riders bailing out of the "carnage". It's perfectly possible to ride that route at a steady rate of effort (ie brisk on the flats, slow on the climbs) but if those who want to push on a bit (c'mon, you know who you are) head off in one group and those who really are going to keep it steady go in another, everyone should be fine. 

My last post was cautionary rather than celebratory!
I'm all for keeping it steady on this route. I think two groups is sensible but I hope that means the 'faster' group aren't going to race round like it was summer.
As Phil says, I'm sure it's possible to stick together as long as too many don't get over excited on the hills.

Its great there are so many people out on these rides and I think we should be able to organise ourselves into groups based on ability or desire for pace. That way no-one needs to worry that they are slowing someone else up and can train at a pace to suit themselves.
Phil's suggestion makes perfect sense - how about just adding some pre-warned times so that Malton ride splits into two group with faster one going off at 9:00 and the steadier one going off at 9:05. As these groups know what they are doing , you just need two people to say on the forum that they will signal for their group to leave and that's it. The faster group can do what they like and not care about dropping someone. The steadier group can pick up those dropped and try to get most people round together.

8:50am - Reuben - A168/Boroughbridge/Crayke as last week with a bit more pace. Aim is to get everyone round together, build group skills, for newer riders and those wanting steadier ride but this is a training ride, not a social (i.e you should be out of breath enough to not be able to chat!).
9:00am - Volunteer 1 - Malton route of death - fast group riding. Don't expect group to wait if you get dropped. But you have a fall-back option behind you if you blow.
9:05am - Volunteer 2 - Malton route, steadier - brisk on flat, steadier uphills. Steadier overall but still good pace, expect minimal slowing for you if you are struggling. More likely to stay together.
Hopefully we have about 10 in each group. Volunteer 1 and 2 should not expect to have to do anything apart from signal that their group is leaving and try to make sure there is a roughly even split in group numbers.

I shall be out as per usual - but without the (not so musical accompaniment) from my front wheel - ordered a new one - but should have checked if I could repair the old one first - oh well the rim was very worn and I now have a spare wheel in my garage.
I was expecting and therefore mentally preparing myself for the East route (yikes) this week. I'll lead group two if people want (well I say lead - stick at the back, clinging to any wheel I can). Though I think there's some merit if we all did the Crayke route (with the extension) again.
