Weekend Roundup - 1st/2nd Sept.

Post by PhilSud »

I managed to get out this weekend on Rob's tour of the wolds.

6 of us left the square and headed out to climb up onto the wolds in the Acklam/ Leavening area. 5 of the group then danced on the pedals up Settrington Bank before having to wait for me to get myself up there. We then cycled down to Driffield where we refuelled in the cafe at Bell Mills.

Back via Tibthorpe, Huggate, Millington and Stamford Bridge.

I managed to do over 80 miles which was the furthest I had done for sometime, and I would just like to say thanks to Rob and the group for keeping my spirits up and a very enjoyable days riding

Dave C's alternative Ryedale Rumble for me. Route as per Dave's thread - Helmsley, Cockayne Loop, Blakey Bank, Castleton, Egton Bridge, Rosedale Chimney and back via Foston. 117 miles for me with almost 9000ft of climbing meant this was the hardest ride I've done for a couple of years - since I last rode the official rumble in fact. Everyone looked after each other well and there were no major dramas although one chap (Gary?) managed to damage the frame protector on his bike when his chain came off and decided to head back.

Thanks to all for a 'grand day out' and to Dave for organising.

EDIT: Having read G's offering I've realised I should have made reference to Mr Hub's exemplary example of how to give everyone's backside a good kicking every time the road trended upwards. He stormed the Chimney in his ? 38x25 as if it was a mere false flat.....

Rumbled in the Ryedale Jungle - a.k.a. The Overgeared Oversight

Hi, I'm Greg. You might remember me as the cyclist who rolled up to the start of the Anfield 100 late and with a broken bike computer, or who locked his mitts and (magic protective) cloth cap in Tim's car just before the Elmet 12h. This week we have the third episode of my ongoing love-hate relationship with the 7P principle.

My appetite was whetted this week when Dave C planned his alternative Ryedale Rumble route - was this a chance to ride a sportive without penuring myself with the entry fee? Others had clearly thought alike, as 20 of us rolled out of the square at 9:00 Saturday morning. Don't ask me to name names! Before we knew it, Sean was up to his usual merciless tricks on the front and we headed like a missile for the nearest hill, nudging 20mph with the wind.

All was not well, however. I could hear distinct murmurings from behind me, something about “Rosedale Chimey”. Not having given the route more than a cursory glance before, I’d brought a lowest gear of 39x25. Were we really going chimneying? Yes? Oh. At least I wasn’t alone: Willhub had something similar. Then again, he also looked stronger than me.

Various people peeled off, until there were 12 (or was it 11?) of us left at the café in Castleton. We seemed to overwhelm them, so we’ll possibly be due a trophy at the awards dinner for most time spent on a café stop, but the food was nice when it came. The legs did need quite a wake-up call afterwards, but this was handed out in bucketloads by the climb from Glaisdale. “Is this Rosedale Chimeny?!” came an anguished cry from a cyclist who’d evidently done even less preparation than me. “No!” - I’d have taken more pleasure in disappointing him, but was too short of breath myself.

After all that buildup, the chimney itself was almost an anti-climax. I was felled by the steepest part, on the straight after the hairpins. At the top, about half the group put their hands up to having stayed upright – well done guys. After that it was just a long drag home, which eventually ended, allowing me to savour one of Theakston’s finest recovery drinks.

Thanks for the ride Dave, but I think I’ll give it a miss next week!

It was a great day, tough, after 70 miles I was hammered due to my lack of distance and the fact I don't ride up hills much anymore. I went up Blakey Bank thinking this was a really hard, insanely hard, then getting to the top and finding out I never got into the 25 cog at the back (bent mech to blame for that one)

Rosedale Chimney was simply a practice of track standing and weight lifting.

Once I got home I had 140.5 miles on the clock - http://app.strava.com/rides/20504343 , simply the longest all in one ride for almost 2 years I think.

The last 40 miles was horrible for me, could hardly keep sat on my bike, could not stop thinking of food, and then I got into York and thought "Nah ya just trollin me now >:(" because of the extra strong smell of chocolate in the air. From the cafe stop all the way back home I ate nothing, my own fault really, as me doing this ride was a spur of the moment thing as I was going to just do a training ride.

Thanks DaveC for helping me out with dinner, I'll owe you next time I see you, possibly on Saturday.

In a month or so it'll be time to play catchup as I've got a work experience placement in London for 2-4 weeks from Sunday, and I'll be without a bike :(

I know how Greg feels, my weekend was similar........
I got a time penalty at the Scarborough time trial for getting to the start late. I was directed to the finish instead of the start!
Other than my navigational issue the time trial was a really friendly and well organised event. A bit hilly and windy for my liking, but I will definitely be back again to deal with my unfinished business and would recommend it!!

As G describes above, a real challenge, points well deserved.

It was a great ride with dry weather and some good group riding, especially on the in leg.

No real drama apart from a sheep which was undecided which way to go coming into Castleton but fortunately we missed it!.

Thanks everyone for a great day.

When asking that, I felt more panic-stricken than merely anguished…

Soon after 9 am, we Rumblers flew up the vale of York in search of mountains of pain, safe in the knowledge we’d be “riding as a group.”
But the regimented group riding was only to bring us to the playground- the Moors- as quick and fresh as possible (thanks Shaun!). Once past Helmsley and into Bransdale, the fun really began as we divided into 2s and 3s, each enjoying their own level of intensity. Split-regroup-split-regroup was how we conquered the Moors.

Off Blakey Bank climb, the long descent into Castleton was the perfect warm down for the café stop. Then came the toughest part of the ride- trying to combat stiffness after 2 hours rest at the cafe.
But like ducks out of the water, we were graceful again once back on our bikes… only for some of us to dismount and waddle a bit up the final Chimney Bank climb.
Then Ian H got a mobile signal at the top of Chimney Bank- “I’m just phoning the other half to set up the turbo trainer for tonight.” This was met with laughter, much to my relief.

All in, we had a lot of fun and 7hrs 20mins of riding later, a quietened group rolled into York: Willhub, Dave C, Ian H, Paul S, Dr. Dave, Steen B, Neil S, Shaun W, John S, Liam and Greg.

Thanks Dave C for arranging a great ride. :D

Well done guys and thanks for warming things up for Dawn, Steve & I who did route 2 on Sunday - the weather was fantastic so the views in Bransdale where just stunning - which had the effect sush that I couldn't face the left turn into Farndale, so rode straight on to H-Le Hole and waited for D & S at the cafe.
Whilst there Bill Baker came in having ridden out thru' Rosedale & up to Ralph's Cross before descending Blakey Ridge to the cafe, & he is 82 !!
He did say that he had seen some Clifton tops in Rosedale - was this remnants from Saturday ? or another grp doing the same ride?
Please report in if it was either,
Bernard

Short rumble for me on Saturday - as mentioned a large group left the square, and after the Cockayne loop I made a split second decision to follow Tony, Carol and Paul right towards Kirkbymoorside for the shorter run home. Quick stop cafe in Hovingham and home with a good 1800m climbing and 98 miles. Thanks Dave for organising :)

Sunday was another lovely day and so I joined five other club runners for a tour of the wolds to Driffield. Another great ride in great company and home with 107 miles and around 1200m climbing on the clock.

To finish off the weekend I took advantage of the fact that my brother needed to collect keys and went for a trip to Sheffield yesterday for some speedy climbing around the Peak District. With such great weather the views were stunning, which made for another fantastic ride. Another 48 miles in the bank and another 1100m climbing, finished off with a lovely pub lunch in the sun. :D
