The thing is with that bit of road it is long and straight and possibly people think it is the last chance to get in a good position so come on the outside then do not go all the way through and that point about third back becomes very conjested with riders trying to get back behind someone before those s bends and as Cam says it only takes one touch of wheels.

Dirtwheels road race today for me, first race of the year and a pretty tame start.
I never really got into it in truth, and rode a very boring race which isn't like me. I did have a go in the sprint but have no idea where I finished. Paul Bennett just pipped me on the line, and he reckons he came 5th or 6th.
Martin got round and seemed to enjoy it. I'm just glad the first one is done and I hope it gets warmer from now on, because my skinny little legs don't like the cold.

Good stuff Darren.
I lost contact with the pack pretty early. Too cautious coming down the bank with so many riders round me I think. I should have bust a gut to get back on but settled in with a smaller group behind.
Ploughed on and passed a few on the road and a lot more that looked like they had abondoned.
I finished and I didn't come last so my first two objectives have been achieved! Glad to get my first race behind me.

Yorkshire day @ the races for me and AndyM today. The track was a little damp due to the rain, yet it managed to hold off for the race.
Judging my the fact i am writing this now means i didn't crash during the race. Yay! This doesn't mean, however that it was easy going, the first turn on the track was always very nervous and i hope people will loosen up in future races.
Anyway, i was up at the front for most of the race, laps quickly passed by and no attackers made it more than 10 bike lengths ahead due to the strong headwind, and so it wasn't reeaaaally that interesting.
I found myself on the front with 2 laps left, and kept the pace high so i could be in the mix at the finish, i intended to quickly pull of the front, but my effort lasted a full 1 and a half lap. Not good. I was quickly overtaken once we hit the wind, and on the finishing straight someone directly infront of me decided that bumping into the rider next to them would be fun, causing me to brake and lose about ten places at the finish.
Bottom line, it was a good race and i certainly think that a strong showing from Clifton could achieve a result... considering i managed to lead out the whole group...
Next one is in two weeks...be there.
Cheers

By contrast the weather was foul for the old blokes' outing at Barton - strong, gusty wind, rain and touches of hail. Woohoo - a hard race just got harder. Tim and RichardD off in the A group (last) and me and NigelT in the C group about three minutes earlier plus AndyC a further minute in front in the D's. Our group motored along with about six or seven doing a fair chunk of the work (unwisely including me) but after half an hour of what turned out to be about 280W average my legs gave out on the false flat after the finish. A couple of laps later I got swept in with the B's and did a couple of laps with them until it all got too much again and I shared the last couple of laps with a couple of others who'd been shelled out of my group. Nil points - frustrating as the remainder of the C group swept through the field and took all the top placings - but a cracking Belgian tan and the season's first racing miles in my legs.
Well done to Nigel for a good first race after more years than he'd probably care to remember, and RichardD who pretty much kept the B's in sight despite riding almost the entire event as a two-up!

Woke to drizzle, and the drive over towards Hull was under an ominous black cloud with the occasional spot of hail. As Phil has already said not the best conditions and to cap it all Tim and I were last off in a group of only five chasing bigger groups into a nasty headwind on the back straight and longer uphill drag. Ended up being a hard work out and what I think Joe Friel calls a C-priority race. C for cuppa and cake at the HQ in my case. Not sure I am too keen on these pursuit races, but it's the only one I plan to do this year. Hopefully there will be a chance to sit in for a bit next Sunday.
In the same manner as Mart66 I finished and I didn't come last! The pace in the C group was manageable for me for the first two laps but then racked up a bit and out I went. Did the rest on my own other than a third of lap 4 with the Bs. Was passed by RichardD who shouted some encouragement (thanks Richard- at that point I needed it) and then continued with my TT effort.
Was looking forward to the cheering crowds as I crossed the line. Unfortunately by the time I crossed the line the organisers had taken it down and were packing up to get out of the rain (as had all the marshals on my last lap)!
Seriously, I had the objective of at least managing a couple of laps with the bunch so achieved that. Again a good picture of where I am and what I need to do to be able to keep with the bunch for longer.
Thanks for the company Phil, a good first race for me, enjoyed it and looking forward to the next (which will not be until June- preparing for the Fred W from here on!)

Not a great day at North Newbald for Clifton.
I unshipped my chain second time up the climb, got back on the chase and bike sounded like a bag of spanners, a quick inspection couldn't find anything wrong with it. By now the bunch were well up the road. A minute or two later Cam came up the road having punctured, decided to ride round together to get some training miles in, only to discover I had a soft back tyre, so back to HQ for me and a DNF.
Back at HQ discovered the noise was a boken spoke nipple inside my carbon rim.
The only problem with racing in the wolds is if it rains about a third of the bunch will puncture, bad luck Cam I understand you had a flat last year as well.
Anyhow back home with a glass of red and waiting for Liege. Hope the vets at the Derek Smith had a bit more luck.
