Quite a few in the square on Saturday. Everybody set off together up the A19 before Billy G had a flat. Shaun W and I continued onto Pateley Bridge with everybody else heading to Ripley. We were joined briefly by Greg and Mark until Aldwark bridge before they both headed back. That left the two of us to battle the wind to Pateley. The wind only became a real issue 5 miles from the cafe on the road from Sawley to Pateley. Both of us were feeling it and was grateful for the break. After the cafe I felt revived and helped by the tailwind made good progress back to York through Knaresborough, lLittle Ribston, Long Marston etc. We missed a turn after Little Ribston and ended up in Wetherby but some back tracking got us on the right road. Good ride Shaun and thanks for sticking withus to to drop me off on the bike path even it meant a longer ride for you across York. Spot on 75 miles round trip from York with a reasonable ave speed of just over 15mph. Certainley a ride that felt harder than it should have been because of the wind. Good to get home in daylight though
Actually had 3 of the blighters ended up changing the tyre, thanks Kevin for the tyre, thanks to those who stayed and helped and to those that rode on the front and blocked that naughty wind.
After turning up late at the square, I was pleasantly surprised when my attempt to catch the group actually worked, and was then relieved when Mark told me he was just out for the morning - as I had lots of other stuff to do this weekend. Thanks Mark: our trip around Easingwold, Crayke and Sutton really hit the spot.
Sadly, the rest of the weekend hasn't lived up to scratch: all I managed to do by working was to probably disprove two ideas on which I'd been pinning my chances. I should have chosen the longer ride!
Sunday morning 9am. Bright but cold. No teachers this week due to to them struggling though half term, or so they were trying to tell us last week. Just 7 at Assembley Bernard his friend Dominick I think it was, scouse Mike, IanH, Ian from Askham, Dave the Hat and self. No real plan just going north. Bernard took us out of the city we kept on the A19 to Shipton due to hedge clippings on the road near Overton. Most took a turn at the head of the pack to Cundall. At which point we found out Bernard did have a plan and he and Dominick turned left. 5 Went on to Topcliffe, Dalton across the A19 to Bagby on to Balk left up that lane to bring you out on the A170 top end of Sutton under Whitestonecliffe. Right at bottom of village to Felixkirk. No takers at this point Rob for Boltby Bank and Hawnby so you have it for another day. Everyone had warmed up by this stage and were enjoying the clear views and quiet lanes. On to Kirby Knowle Upsall South Kilvington and into Thirsk for our bait. In the cafe we had a debate on the merits of plumb jam. We could not agree if it is a model super food or a food for super models. We did find out that Dave likes raspberry but they had non. We were going to take it easy home on the lanes to the left of the A19. However at the first roundabout in Thirsk Dave said he had no energy due to the Decaf tea. Mike also was a bit drained after being out with Kevin on Saturday. So they both took off up the A19. I hope you got home safe lads. 3 went back to Bagby via a short spell on the A170 Kilburn Coxwold Crayke Huby Sutton Strensall via the flat 10TT road back into York. 7out, 3 back not great group work but I think everyone got what they needed out of it. Pace was better than brisk at times and less when it needed to be. Not sure on the distance possibly 70. I think maybe we do need the teachers to keep us in order. Hope to be out on Saturday next week as its been a while.
Dominick & I went across to Boroughbridge from Cundall and then on to Bishop Monckton, before heading down to Knaresborough and the cafe stop with 39 miles done.
We then took the route back via Wetherby, Wighill, Tadcaster, Bolton Percy etc. Getting back with 65 miles under the belt, so maybe we could have stuck together, but our pace was a little slower I think.
This was Dominicks longest ride so hopefully as he is my new next door neighbour he will join future rides.
