Stuff for the next Cliftonite by end Feb please.

Fixtures/events/things to do, articles, pictures, stories - anything cycling related, sports related or just generally of interest - get in touch if you're not sure.

Please no Microsoft Publisher files as I can't open them!

There will be no Spring Cliftonite this year.

Cath has only received 1 submission of content which clearly isn't enough to fill a page let alone a magazine.

We'd already decided at the AGM to review what we do with the magazine going forwards so this has clearly brought some urgency to it.

Like everything else we do in the Club it has to be a joint thing between the membership and the Committee.

We'll be having some discussions behind the scene and then contacting you separately for your views but in the meantime please discuss, openly but constructively, below what your thoughts are.

Do you read the magazine?
What changes would you like?
Is it still relevant in the modern (digital) age?
How to we encourage members to submit content?

...... over to YOU

I would support a move to digital media in the format of a blog, were members can post there stories and pictures.

There are many types of blog, YMC use this one and their latest post is:

http://www.yorkmc.org.uk/days-out-from-york/

All posts have to be aproved by YMC's Editor, just to keep things legal and apropriate :)

It's great to be able to look back over the years to see what we were up to back then and it's all in one easily accessable place.

Yes I enjoy reading it, I'd like to see it go full colour. Long live Print.

Having said that I've never contributed anything to it, but I don't write a blog either. Is the spring edition harder to fill since not a lot happens over winter?... maybe we could just have the autumn edition, and a newsletter in the spring.

If it is the end of the Cliftonite, I'd just like to thank Cath and everyone else for the hard work put in over the years.

I like the printed Cliftonite too. I probably wouldn't bother reading a blog. I think it is nice to get something printed.

Could go to just one thicker one at the end of the season? The discussion board is good for knowing what events are on etc throughout the year.

Although I would read a blog or online 'zine, I like the printed Cliftonite too - it was a pleasant bonus in the membership pack when I joined, and has always been good to read. I'm sure this website takes away some of the reasons to have a regular newsletter, but an annual edition sounds like a good solution. I'm even willing to write more nonsense to help pad it out...

Actually the main website already conceals some secret 'bloggery'. For example, http://www.cliftoncc.org/challen/challe ... -alps-2006 . As there's nothing since 2006 I'm guessing that this forum took over from then?

I always enjoy reading the paper version. I read it cover to cover, often on the day it arrives. I've written a few articles in my time, but haven't recently - I got the impression that not many other people actually read them....

15 years ago we produced 4 editions a year..... but back then it was the only way we kept everyone in touch.

It would be a shame to see it go.

Cliftonite

I have always enjoyed reading it and look forward to the post when it is due.
I know we need sometimes to move on with the times, but couldn't we put together a spring edition covering the new seasons programme for all events both on & off road. Along with a resume of the annual dinner and if we need to add some stories I would be happy to contribute something of an historical nature.
I am very aware of all the hard work put in by Cath over recent years and would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all her hard work.

Thanks to Cath for all the hard work - I really enjoy my Cliftonites. Also, I've just found the magazine archive online and am enjoying reading about Rob's 24!

As for the current lack of articles, it doesn't feel very long since the last one was out, at least it doesn't feel long to me. While people do less riding in the winter, there must be plenty of stuff from last season that hasn't been written up yet. There are one or two things I could have done, but after getting published in the last issue, it would have felt like I was treating the magazine as my own blog, if you know what I mean.

A blog on the website could be good, as it could encourage people to write stuff and see themselves 'in print' straight away, with the really good pieces being harvested and adapted for the hard copy. I'd better shut up now, before I talk myself into a job!

Asolute ditto to thanks for and appreciation of Cath's hard work.

Whilst I've managed to contribute one article using the the wonders of electronic media when it comes to consuming the product give me hard copy anytime.

What a shame, I really like the Cliftonite and I read it cover to cover too. I've kept them all. I find what club members get up in it often very inspiring. I wonder if people are a bit too modest sometimes to tell everyone about their achievements.

I didn't realise there weren't many contributions, I rarely submit anything because I always think what I get up to wouldn't warrant inclusion because there'll always be better material....perhaps I'm wrong.

It seems there is enthusiasm for the paper Cliftonite and it acts as a permanent record of proceedings, unlike computer records with ever changing storage methods [tapes, floppy discs, hard discs etc etc.]

Good news-5 or 6 of us are meeting on Wednesday to take it forward. We will take into consideration all the comments here. Feel free to post more.

Sounds good. There's a hint from G. and Broomwagon which I can echo - a general unease about writing for the magazine in case nobody wants to read what you write, or a fear of seeming 'full of it' (this could sound rich coming from someone unafraid to faff on at length on this forum  ).

I suspect if the hard-working Editor or her panel of assistants (!) chucked out a handful of discreet emails to people who'd either written before or had confessed to Exciting Adventures on here, inviting their contributions, they would probably be flattered and say 'yes'. We need to overcome the natural reticence of the hard-pedalling Cliftonian somehow...

I’m a firm believer in utilising all communications tools available to us. We live in a multi-channel age, not just a digital age, where people interact via print, online, mobile, telephone, store, kiosk, etc. I’ve explained this because I think the printed Cliftonite has its own critical role to play in the Club’s multi-channel approach to its members. We should be looking to adopt all available technologies to improve our members’ experience and interaction with the Club, but that should not entail the exclusion of one tool for another. The critical point is that each tool has its own defined purpose.

As Steph says, online and mobile are both very important for the ‘here and now’, - facts about dates, events, etc. can easily be published on the website and even printed out if needed. Online discussion forums, blogs and notice boards can all facilitate arrangements, reporting of results, comments, debates, even the occasional argument – all helping to turn the wheels of everyday life at the Club.

But what role does the Cliftonite play? In my view, it fills a unique and valuable gap in our communications. It provides the extra level of depth of content which ensures that members, old and new, gain an intimate sense of the culture, social fabric and 100 year history of our great Club and what it means to wear the Clifton jersey. When I try to recall the great stories of recent years, none of them were published on the website. Lisa B’s edge-of-the-seat story about the girls winning a medal at Mountain Mayhem, Paul M’s story of Rob and himself battling arctic sub-zero temperatures on the Winter Tan Hill, Greg’s painful recollection of his PBP epic, and countless others I’ve enjoyed – all suit a more in-depth print edition, all define our Club and capture more than anything else a sense of history and Club spirit that could never be portrayed in the superficial 140-character culture of online and mobile.

Further, if costs weigh heavily, then the issue should not be whether the Cliftonite is produced, but rather whether it should also be trialled in the form of an online magazine which is cheaper to produce and emailable to our membership. Importantly, the content and purpose of the publication would still be the same.

Anyway, I spoke to Tullio on Saturday and will also volunteer to help out. I recall starting up the advertising in the Cliftonite many moons ago so I’m keen to help out again. I've got a few ideas about gathering content too ;)
