Weekend round-up, 3rd/4th

Post by PhilBixby »

I thought I might as well kick this off before I commence relaxation therapy involving wine and plenty of it. Team Clifton was down at Braithwell for the morning's vet's race (Andy C) and the afternoon Richard Hoyland Memorial BC 3rds/4ths RR (Cam, Tim and me). I'd not raced for a month and not sat on the bike for three weeks up until a couple of days ago, so my expectations were modest. It was doing that particularly wet sort of drizzle as we gathered for the start, but thankfully dried out over the two hours of the race.

It was a real proper "3rds & 4ths" race with every attack being immediately dragged back until two escapees survived for a lap and got joined by a third, fast, lad and started to stretch their lead. It was a pretty fast race - over 25mph average, but drama-free until just over two laps to go when we approached the blind right-hander at the back of the circuit to be greeted by a very animated Pam Clay flapping her arms around. Just behind Pam was a combine harvester, blocking all but about two foot of road width. We all squeezed and slid through but the b*****ds who squeezed through first took the opportunity to absolutely floor it, and it took me - and a fair few others - about a mile of grinding my teeth to hook back onto the bunch.

The three up the road stayed away and the sprint for fourth downwards was a very messy affair - at least two wheels got pedals through them on the fast (35mph+) approach and the fella in front of me ended up on the grass. As a result I rolled in a couple of places behind Cam - somewhere between 15th and 20th. Satisfying though given I was wondering whether I'd even remember which way round the pedals went. Normalized Power just on 250W for 55 miles.

Right... ...cheers!

Four of us did the Saturday intermediate ride (compared with at least 12 on Kevin's ride). Although Kev had prepared the route for us two of the guys refused to ride it due to their knowledge of the road surface near Stape. There didn't seem much point in splitting our small group of 4 even further so we agreed to do Tony's ride to Brimham (Sorry Kev!) with a cafe stop at Knaresborough on the way back. Good ride with Tony, Keith and Jack, totalled 74.5 miles for me at an average of 18.5mph. Thanks guys :D :D

I did the Seacroft wheelers 25 along with Tim R. My first TT on a dual carriageway! Perfect conditions so some very fast times. Happy with my 57.28. Main reason for putting a post is that I checked the provisional results and there is a photo of Tim on the link below ...you're looking fast Tim.

Thanks for the link Pete and generous comments although I tend to think that I look like more like the clown who left his TT helmet on the kitchen table rather than "fast" :D
Saturday brought the Scarboro Paragon 10 at Burton Fleming incorporating our very own Clifton club championship. I really like this course which is similar in feel to our own Whenby circuit. Conditions were a bit breezy for me and felt that I struggled the whole way round but the crowds were out (as well as the tractors) so tried to give it everything!
My season long duel with Mark A continued right down to the wire with Mark pipping me by the now customary six seconds (although he did get stung by a wasp back at hq in an effort to cheer me up) :D I do believe at the sharp end of the results that Jon Cocker might be having to clear some space on his sideboard after the presentation evening.
Sunday dawned and off we tootled to the Seacroft Wheelers 25 on what proved to be a very fast day as Pete has allready said. I was like a dog with two tails to discover that I managed to knock one and a half minutes off my previous best time whick now stands at 60:17! So not gone under the hour yet but now believe that I can do it.
It was nice to chat to Pete after the event as quite often I have been Cliftons only enterant in these open tt's. I definately do not want this season to end but am running out of events now!
