Wednesday evening training rides

Post by HowardD »

It's that time of year again and I propose that we resurrect the evening rides starting Wed. 27/10. All rides start at 18:30 and routes are as follows:

Route 1 aka "Cycle Heaven". Sub 20 miles, easiest of the three routes, very fixed friendly, meet outside Cycle Heaven Bike shop:
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?l ... heaven.tcx

Route 2 aka "Pete's Bench". Sub 25 miles, experience the delights of the Buttercrambe Bossall road! Meet at, er, Pete's Bench (city end of Stockton Lane):
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?l ... ebench.tcx

Route 3 aka "Nestle Clock". Sub 30 miles, hardest of the 3 routes but still ok for fixed. Meet at the big clock outside Nestle on Haxby Road (there are 2, so let's say the one closest to Haxby):
http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?l ... tleclk.tcx

I propose that we do routes in the following order: 1,2,3 and then repeat, one route only per evening!

So, to recap, first ride is on Wed. 27/10/10 starting outside Cycle Heaven on Bishopthorpe Road at 18:30.
All ok with this? Of course, constructive comments from prospective participants (or from anyone really) always welcome...

See you in the dark

Just bouncing this back to the top.
Forecast is for a mild, dry evening. It is still October so the ride should stay sensible - at least I hope it will!

I'll be there (Cycle Heaven 18:30) too, on my singlespeed. I've got a bit of a cold so a gentle tootle around will be fine for me.

A magnificence of 7 riders turned up at Cycle Heaven for this the inaugural 2010 Wed. evening training ride. Balmy weather as predicted by PaulM above and dry roads made for a hassle free hour or so.

Hard man of the evening award must surely go to Shaun W who completed the ride on a, I can hardly bring myself to say it, mountain bike which sported a rack holding a bulging full sized pannier!

If you haven't done these rides before but are thinking of doing them, here are my Garmin stats. for tonight which should help you to judge whether they're suitable for you:

See you at Pete's Bench next week

That was my first Wednesday evening ride and it was excellent fun. The pace presented no problems, but I suspect that this was 'steady' and it will be higher in future weeks. On the other hand, the weather will also get colder so a higher intensity may be no bad thing! Thanks all.

Good ride everyone but a 20 mph average is too close to chaingang pace for my liking. I'd prefer to be "training" in Feb to be fit for April rather than training in Oct to be race fit for Christmas! It would be better to be a couple of miles an hour slower now, everyone gets a turn at the front instead of yo yoing off the back and pick it up from there in the new year.
Not an issue last night but mudguards are respectful to your fellow riders!

Yes what Paul said and a mudflap helps too.

20mph average is far too brisk for me in october, see you in the new year.

ok, speed points noted, let's make it a bit less brisk next Wednesday then. I'm off to the garage now to fit a smaller chainring to my "cog" - really I am!

I'm generally easy about the speed we go. But if it gets too fast for me I just shout "knock half off!" loudly and repeatedly if necessary until said half or perhaps even halves has or have indeed been knocked off!

I never mind anyone shouting this at me but, as I'm a little hard of hearing, I sometimes just don't hear the shouts of others. However, jabbing me in the ribs always elicits a response!

If I feel the pace's too slow for me, I just relax, endeavour to say nothing and simply sniff the flowers, metaphorically speaking!

So maybe see you next week Mr Skymoos?

Howard, just carry on doing what you do, I'm sure many on the bunch enjoy the short brisk workout. Posting the garmin thingy whatsit lets people know the score.
