My second cyclocross race on Sunday. I achieved both goals of actually finishing the race and not coming last, can't describe how unlike anything I've done before 'cross is. You kill yourself for an hour, most of the time in a battle with the rider directly in front or behind, then after the race you have a sit down and a cup of tea. This week was dry but that only meant the course was faster, so the effort was really hard just to stay up to race pace.
I would recommend anyone in the club to have a go, it's easily the most accessible way to get into racing a bike and probably the safest.

I agree with Ben about encouraging everyone to have a go at cyclocross. I'm really enjoying my first season, though I had a mechanical disaster this week so had to DNS. Bradley Woods in Brighouse next Sunday is meant to be a good course. Details here:

Lots MTBing this weekend.
It was another Club weekend away to Edale for a fair sized group in the Peaks with 2 days of big rides and good weather based at the hostel.
However, on Saturday some of us headed to Edale via Cropton to compete in the last event of the 2010 NYMBO League. A great course through Cropton and Newtondale Forests with the, predicted, mud punctuated by the odd dry section. Steph and Jeff put in their 2nd best performance of the year to win their category and, with it, the Mixed Pairs trophy for the year. Allan also put in his best ride of the year and took 5th place in the league in the fiercely competitive M40 class. Well done Allan. Results here http://www.nymbo.org.uk/index.htm

Sunday clubrun for me. 9 in The Square; John Clark, Mussy, Nigel, AndyG, Nigel, Dave Chippett, Howard and Swindon Andy. 4 of us on-the-cog (although Howard had a girlie version with freewheel). Have to say though that Howard had been with Cookie to How Stein Gorge on Saturday - so no white feathers were proffered.
Absolutely fabulous morning with early mist hanging in the fields below a spotless blue sky. All felt that this was no day for heroics and a mellow route was crafted through Stammy Bridge, Pock and Market Weighton. Then the climb of the Hudson Way to Middleton, the ridge road to Nunburnholme (what a view!) and round to the newly reopenned Millington Cafe. The service was a little rusty, but nobody minded being there a little longer than usual.
Third puncture of the day on the climb out of Millington saw us sun-bathing in the road (take your time Andy!) Then standard route in through Kirkby Underdale and Buttercrambe. 70 odd miles and rarely more than a bike length between riders all day.
Thanks for the company.

First meeting of the new track season on Friday night for me. Experience sounds a bit like Ben's cyclocross - the races are very short and intense punctuated by lots of tea drinking and chatting in between. I was put into an easier group on Friday and managed to notch up two wins, a second place and a couple of 4ths. The intensity does take some time to recover from - might just be fit to resume training for the next one today !
I set off out on Saturday morning with Kevin and about a dozen or more others under a blue sky, for the last weekend in my month of being social prior to starting another Winter of Suffering. After a good soaking by a passing downpour, and traversing of a lane-ful of brown stuff, I was stood by the roadside waiting for various punctures to be fixed, and getting increasingly chilly in the northerly wind. Knowing I had limited time available (and topsoil to shift...) I headed off for a brisk three-hours-worth on my own. Good to see both new faces and old faces on the Saturday rides though - the club's clearly continuing to grow.
Dave I'A commented that we should charge the farmer for the laundry bills resulting from the brown stuff; one hot wash later my jacket still has a brown stripe up the back so I'm starting to think it was maybe a good idea!

#573 in the list of things cyclists have to put up with that non-cycling motorists have no idea about, or they wouldn't piss and moan so much about occasionally being held up for a fraction of a minute behind us. Time to get out the winter bike with full mud guards and flaps.PhilBixby wrote:Dave I'A commented that we should charge the farmer for the laundry bills resulting from the brown stuff; one hot wash later my jacket still has a brown stripe up the back so I'm starting to think it was maybe a good idea!
