Weekend round-up - 2nd/3rd

Post by PhilBixby »

I headed up to the square for the social ride this morning but sadly it was less social than I'd planned! There was a large and merry group of a dozen or more and blue skies overhead, however... ...as I rolled the bike round to join the departing group, I realised my front tyre was completely flat! I shouted a quick "just carry on without me" to a couple of the group and then set about the usual routine, namely swearing a lot and then making a right meal of changing the tube. About fifteen minutes later, and via a quick track-pump requisition in Bob Trotters, I was time-trialling my way steadily towards Helperby with a following wind.

By this stage of it all I'd decided that I was probably better doing a non-stop three hours or so and then spending some quality time with my tyre levers putting new tyres on my winter wheels, and the winter wheels on the bike. So I did a loop around Coxwold, Crayke, Brandsby and back to York; lovely autumnal blue skies and the landscape in its finest colours. Am now plotting my tactics re the very robust-looking tyres; I reckon if I sneak up on them I can take them by surprise, and get them onto the rims before they realise what's happening and put up a fight. If all goes well, hopefully there'll be no punctures next week....

...and a second instalment following the second bout of swearing and tyre-levering:- Woke Sunday morning to torrential rain but the news that Thor Hushovd had won the Worlds RR (what with Emma Pooley too, I think I can pretty clearly visualise Cervelo's ads for the next six months) so decided to HTFU and check out the new tyres with a couple of hours or so out around Taddy and Bramham. Much local flooding - anyone who does the Hillclimb has my enduring respect and even more so those who find traction to get to the top. But everyone I saw was happy; they were smiling, they said hello. Returned wet but cheery.

Five regulars opted for the Intermediate ride: The Professor, Manchester Marathon Man, Pub Landlord, Vasco da Gama and Yours Truly. We fought it out in the lanes under Rosedale before lunching in the sun in Pickering. We really lucked out with the sunshine, especially given Friday and Sunday’s appalling weather.

Clearly some of our regulars had indulged in far too many Weetabix for breakfast because I thought this ride was seriously tough! I blame the Pub Landlord whose sprinting skills complemented those of Marathon Man, resulting in far too many lung-busting sprints to wind up the speed kings, Vasco and the Professor! :) We arrived in Pickering way too soon, we even stopped at one point to consider adding an extra loop but couldn’t find one. The Professor summed it up when he said: “We’re really creamin’ this ride!” The pace continued unabated on the way home through Amotherby and Malton, and if we hadn’t run into the back of a more sedate Chevin Cycles club run for a few miles after the Kirkham climb, it may have got a bit messy! ;)

I feel very sorry for the hill climbers trying to paddle upstream at BW today. Hope there were life buoys on hand!

Not sure what to do next weekend, I’m considering Gerry’s autumn thingy on Sunday but it depends on whether they take EOL’s and what the usual Sunday run does.

:)

Apologies as I've just sent this summary to Cath for the Cliftonite and have copied and pasted here for the forum, rather than do a new ditty!

Clifton CC Hill Climb
Sunday 3rd October 2010
Worsendale Climb, Bishop Wilton

On a day when the sun was shining in a Spring-time Melbourne, Australia and the World’s Elite cyclists were contesting the World Road Race Championships, back in Blighty our riders were braving the elements for the Club’s almost-as-prestigious Hill Climb honours.

Rain poured incessantly from the Yorkshire skies, but unlike with the Ryder Cup Golfers, where rain suspended play, the show went on at Bishop Wilton.

You all rode so well, that I can honestly say for yet another year, I am defeated in being able to pick out the ‘best’ ride of the day.

• Shaun’s beating of a strong field by 20+ seconds deserves great applause
• The women’s course record was certainly not a soft one, so Heather’s improvement on a hard day with a swirling wind and slippery surface is astounding
• Jon Cocker is built more like an out-house than a climber (sorry Jon, it’s a compliment, really!) and as 2010 Thursday League Clifton 1st Claim Champion and Open Time-Trial Series Champion is not a typical grimpeur. He rounded off another great season with a fine 2nd place
• Finishing in 3rd equal place was Paul Scott & Nathan Veall. Nathan has been riding the Thursday evening series this year with his dad, but today, at the age of 14 takes the Junior Hill Climb Title and 3rd place in the overall Senior Event – well done!
• We know of Paul Scott as a very capable MTBer, but here he showed how well he can ride any pair of wheels! And was he saving something for his attempt en-MTB 20mins later? (see below)
• Paul Musgrave maybe didn’t win the Senior event this year and will be disappointed with his ride. But he still puts himself ‘on the line’ whether he is on a good day or a bad day. Vets 40 winner Paul – respect!
• Ian Hagyard finished 1st Vet60 in a respectable 7-38 and Nigel was just behind him on his fixed gear!
• 18 riders made the start line and 20 very respectable times were posted! How does that add up? I have to finish the summary saluting the 2 riders, Jeff & Paul, who not only rode their road bikes, but decided that once you are as wet and cold and tired as you can be, then you might as well have another go en MTB! Mad? Probably, but with a good story to tell!

Many thanks to the organiser’s Support Team with whom the event would not have taken place: Darren (Skymoos) for pushing off; Bernard start timekeeper & Rob, Dad and Dave I’A (Finish timekeeping crew).
Also thanks to the supporters, including Billy G, Andy J & Mac.

Cheers
Claire

A very wet ride out to Bishop Wilton on sunday for me. I think the event has been covered well enough above, I will just say I accurately predicted the winner of the Ladies prize.
I rode back into York with some of the events big hitters. The pace was very brisk (for October) when Shaun and Heather hit the front. The rain stopped in York and I knocked about 5mph off for a nice little potter back to Sherburn.
A good little workout for me but I dont want to be riding that fast again this side of christmas.
Cheers

It was my first cyclocross race on Sunday at a very wet and even muddier Temple Newsam in Leeds. By the time the Senior race came around the course was very cut up and a very heavy shower as we were warming up meant I was soaked before the whistle sounded.
With the race going, I settled into a small group towards the rear of the field and my position yo-yo'd as I lost ground on the technical sections and clawed it back on the grassy drags. On my 5th lap just as I bridged up to a couple of riders infront I suffered two quick crashes which left me with a dead left leg and no power to get through the energy sapping mud. I DNF'd as I reached the finish line for the start of the next lap and barely caught my breath as the winner came across the line.
It's definitely harder than the road racing I have done so far, especially washing half the Temple Newsam mud off my kit afterwards, but strangely enjoyable and I'll be back for the next race in a couple of weeks.
What wasn't so nice was getting up at 5:30am today to catch a train to Manchester with a very sore and black left hip and a few more cuts and bruises dotted around!

Sadly I reckon I've ridden all but 1 of the last 24 club hill climbs.
That's all I have to say really except that of those this is the first time we've actually had rain. Previous events at Bishop Wilton have been positively balmy so our luck had to run out eventually. Thanks to Claire & Rob and everyone who helped out on the day. Congratulations to everyone who rode especially Heather & Shaun for demonstrating greater powers of endurance and perseverance than myself!

2 of us for the 'H' ride so Shaun and myself set off (minus 'H' himself) towards Cockayne via Sand Hutton, Barton, Castle Howard, Kirkdale, Fadmoor. We rode round Bransdale and back down to Helmsley for lunch. The weather was fine all day with a bit of mist but very enjoyable. Returned via Ampleforth, Yearsley, Farlington.

Probably going to do the Audax from Wigginton this Sunday.
