York to London

Post by mikeh »

Does anyone know of a good cycle route from York to London? I'd like it to be a little interesting without going too far off the beaten track. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. I plan to ride it next July.

A big part of the pleasure of any bike tour is the planning and anticipation.

Get those maps spread out on the living room floor and pour yourself a large glass of Red. Indulge yourself.

Off the top of my head - the first stretch will be a bit dull as far as Bawtry - but then you get into the Dukeries area which is kind of fun. Its obvious to pitch into the White Peak from there, then by-pass Brum on the E side and then head round to the Cotwolds.

Alternatively you can go from here to Holmefirth, over Holme Moss then work your way down the Peak District from there.

Have fun

Many thanks for the feedback. This ride is going to be part of a ride from York to Paris. The London to Paris part is already sorted and so I want to make the initial York to London as enjoyable as I can. I want to be able to have some motivation left in my head by the time I get to London! All of the routes that I have looked at so far seem pretty dull, but I'll take your advice with the maps and the Grand Union! Online route planning is quicker but I've found that this facility tends to direct rather than feed the creative juices. Any ideas, even foer the smallest of sections greatly appreciated.

As you may or may not know, Audax UK run a four yearly London-Edinburgh-London ride. In 2009 it passed within a mile of the York ring road, so that should suit you. The route is available here.

Thanks G,

Funnily enough I had looked at this already but had only managed to get the directions not the map. It is all coming together wonderfully now. My plan is to get my route set in stone before the clocks go back and then there will be no turning back for me during the winter months. Any other ideas will be greatfully received however. My plan is a ride af about 240 miles over three days. I think that 80 or so miles each day will be enough riding by myself until I get company from London to Paris.
