Decided to play safe on this ride & did a re-run of the power station ride of last January with Julia,Elaine,Hannah & John, a little bit of ice in the shadows, but overall dry roads & then a new find in a really good cafe at Carlton just north of Snaith. Even a 10% discount for cyclists warm & good in-expensive ( even without the discount), food; back via Newsholme, Foggathorpe, Seaton Ross, Melbourne, Thornton Woods, & then upto Stamford Bridge to drop Julia off. 120K overall back in York for 16.30.

Persuaded Cath to do the Saturday Training Ride which meant she was home for lunch which meant I could sneak a couple of hours on the afternoon. Managed the Gally Gap / Malton / Coneysthorpe / Terrington circuit. Good in that the roads were dry and it was a bright afternoon. Bad in that I felt I was creeping. Usually by this stage you can get out on the summer bike in slightly lighter clothing but I havent even entertained that thought yet. In Willhub tradition an 18.00mph average. Another plus point being a 15:20 start and I was still home in daylight.
About the time I was planning to lead the Sunday training ride I was still staring at the weather from the other side of the glass. Its one thing to go out when there is a light covering of snow and another to set off in it when its still falling out of the sky!
Managed again to get out in the second half of the afternoon - Sheriff / Terrington Bank / Hovingham / Slingsby / Foston / Flaxton. A couple of hours and never even broke the 17 mph average barrier. But it was a hilly route and I'd doubled my body weight with the clothing I had on. It was a dreary afternoon but at least the roads were clear.
In all glad I made the effort both days - the sort of weekend you get through on the road to somewhere better. Racing feels a long way a way - 2 weeks to be precise!
Had been looking forward to the Sunday Clubrun as there'd been plans for a trip round Cockayne (Clifton's favourite ride). Not really surprised to find nobody in the Square though at 0900 as by then it was snowing fairly heavily. Was surprisingly OK under wheel though as the narrow tyres bit through to the terra-tarmaca below. So headed out towards Naburn Lane to at least get a couple of hours in on the flat b roads. The problem was that I couldn't see and my face was rapidly going numb! After hitting a couple of large unseen pot-holes I started to wonder what i was achieving and chose a tactical withdrawal to my living room. Did get out for a couple of hours in the afternoon, so all was not lost. Not a patch on the Cockayne Loop though. Next Sunday anyone?
Is this a new landslip? There was one last year near the furthest point (on the gated climb) that barely effected the road, but the signage kept the traffic to a minimum.
I was joined by Howard and Shaun for the h grp ride to Filey on Saturday. Glorious sunshine, just like summer (if you kept your hr above 160 to keep the biting cold at bay that is).
My crudcatcher rear guard ate itself at Upper Helmsley and ended up in a farmer's wheelie bin-so probably on fleabay by now.
Streches of ice on approach to Acklam caused me some difficulty but, annoyingly, didn't seem to trouble either Shaun or Howard one jot. I can't stand slippery surfaces-I get mountain biking flashbacks-not nice.
Bronte Vinery in Filey closed so we nipped across the road to Bramwell's (sp?) which, despite being run by an ex triathlete who made 'jokes' about my appetite, was really rather good. He even went to the trouble of locking our bikes in his back yard - which was nice.
Bit of a slog home into a freshening breeze. Flixton Wold was despatched, but not very elegantly; I invariably underestimate this hill, at the bottom I think, "I'll big ring it" and at the top I find myself in my lowest gear not really sure what happened.
96 miles at 17.5 av (hub note: this av includes some walking/going v slowly over icy bits)
Didn't manage to get a road ride in this week as I took my son Brad (14) out to compete in the last of the Winter Lanequest's of this season. This was a trial run for the Summer series which starts in March
Arrived at Tollerton, Allan was there signing everyone in & out, managed to have a quick chat to find out that his wife is on the mend after her accident with her horse, which is great news.
Entered in the Generation category with my son for the 2hr event, Steph joined us too. Had a quick look at the map and plotted our course. A thoroughly enjoyable day in which we managed to do about 20km around Tollerton, Alne, Raskelf and a few other little hamlets. Brad was feeling a bit tired on the way back so we gave him a helping little push, at nearly 20mph for a few km's but we still managed to get 315 points out of 525, got deducted 1 for being a minute late so and overall score of 314 which I think is very respectable for our 1st run. Hopefully he will get the bug now and roll on next month when the Summer! series starts, a 4hr event that I hope we can do well in
