Couldn't come out with the club as I had a family BBQ to do on the Sat afternoon, but I did manage a ride.
One of my neighbours has entered the Tour of the Peak with me and was professing how "naturally fit" he was and so wouldn't need to do much training. I thought I would introduce him to a sportive route and so we went up to Gilling and did the first 35 miles of the Ryedale Rumble route! Needless to say he has now had something of a re-think .
I was pretty chuffed though as I made it up Boltby Bank for the first time (4th attempt!).
Was meant to have ridden my last road race of the season with Phil Bixby at somewhere called Styrrup??. Was absolutely certain I would win this - well I was certain a week last Monday but less certain by midweek and by the time I received the least inspiring start sheet I've ever seen, I was past caring! Anyway my fate was sealed on Saturday - carrying a heavy object sideways through our front door I just about managed to impale myself on the door handle - the sort of excruciating pain in me ribs you expect to eventually die away but which is still giving me jip now. After that I didn't really fancy trailing down the A1 for the 3rd time in 3 weeks to make up the numbers for an hour and a half. So there my season ended. Now for some proper cycling......
Made it out late enough on Sunday to dress down a bit on my winter bike of course - out towards Warthill, Bossall, Leavening, Malton, Coneysthorpe, Terrington, and then instead of coming back down Terrington Bank, went down and up the Dalby road. I needed 39 x 23 for that. I rate this stretch of road as one of the best in the area. Up past the little maze and down the narrow Snarzegate farm climb and back through Farlington. Chrystal clear view over the vale of York. 50 miles (which is 15 more then my race) and no carbon emmissions.
Only been out with the club once - a few weeks ago with Kevin, Dr Dave, Dr Dave Junior, and Ash. Got back from holiday on Friday so I thought I'd take it easy over the weekend and then concentrate on shedding a few pounds before giving the hillclimb a bash. Went out on Sunday morning with Jane (wife) - just her second time out on a road bike - for a gentle pootle up towards Aldwark. Passed a couple of club guys I didn't recognise on Rawcliffe Lane. Turning left very slowly at the T junction in Newton-on-Ouse tried to avoid a horse box on the wrong side of the road, lost balance, couldn't get my foot out of the pedal quick enough and ended up on my left side. Left wrist felt a bit sore, having put my hand out to stop myself, so we walked down to the village green to sit down for a few minutes to recover. Shortly afterwards I passed out and came round lying on my back on the green with my feet up on the bench. Realised that my wrist was looking a slightly odd shape!
Managed to get Fleetways taxis to send out a minibus which carried us and our bikes back home before Jane drove me to A&E where they confirmed that the main bone in the wrist had 2 or 3 breaks in it (can't remember how many now) and the other bone also had a break. So after a couple of injections into the wrist nurse and doctor managed to manipulate it into something that resembled a normal wrist and put the plaster on it. Back in for a check up next Monday when they will hopefully decide that it doesn't need an op to pin the bones together and put another pot on which will be there for the next 6 weeks or so.
So, a slightly more eventful weekend than planned, and no hillclimb.
When I injured my wrist (luckily only badly sprained) I found that turbo sessions enabled me to retain a modicum of fitness with minimal jarring - may be worth a try in a couple of weeks?
I don't suppose you got the number of the horsebox that caused the accident?
