As many of you will know, the first stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race is finishing in York. The riders are expected to turn up at the finish line on the Malton road alongside the stray around about 2pm. The council, along with various other organisations involved in promoting cycling, is organising various events on the stray (and indeed on the road - which will be closed - prior to the race arriving) in order to make it a fun-day-out-for-all-the-family kind of thing.
We're involved with it in various ways:-
We'll have a stall there, similar to the one at the Festival of Cycling, where people can come to find out about the club and what we do, and talk to us. Please come along and lurk around and talk to people! The more people we have there, the more likelihood that visitors will find someone with similar cycling-related interests who they can pick the brains of. We'll hopefully have a couple of people doing occasional stints on rollers - if you can think of other attention-grabbing stuff you could do, then post on here and come along!
We'll probably have Cycle Heaven joining us, and it would be good to do some very straightforward bike maintenance stuff - how about a puncture repair demo on the hour every hour? Anyone feel up to taking on a couple of them?
Andy is organising a folding bike relay race (poster available from a link on the website home page) which could do with helpers, and also could do with teams! How about some entries to maintain the honour of the club? A women's team? An old blokes team? A triathletes team? Any of you have enough cycling workmates to put together a team of four? Let's get the numbers up and make it the centre of attention. There will be heats in the morning and the final rounds after the Tour riders have arrived.
It would be good if we could link in some rides somehow - could the Saturday rides set off from our stall? Willy's looking at easy Ride possibilities and will be in contact too...
All of this gets us more members, could get us support from the council (especially as we move towards the whole Go-Ride thing) and helps persuade the general public that we're vaguely human. Plus it's a good laugh. Be there! Event starts at 10:00, goes on until 5:00...
