Non cycling related question

Hi.

Don't suppose anyone around York knows anywhere that's suitable for cars, and is not on public roads but people can go and drive on? Just wondering as I'm wanting to have a go in a car soon but not on public roads but somewhere where I can do more than a small 10meter loop.

You used to be able to take cars onto the old airfield at Tockwith but don't know if this is still the case or who runs it now.

There used to be a course set out for new driver training.

I've just being looking and I notice there is a circuit at elvington? Popular with race day drivers apparently so I wonder if someone who can't drive yet would be allowed on it.

No, you wouldn't get on to Elvington airfield. Even when it is open, you'd have to have a licence. Which is the same with most of these circuits - they're mainly open for races or events, and to use them you need to be able to drive. I dont know about the Tockwith one, but thats what it is for Melbourne and Elvington airfields.

If you want to drive, the easiest way is to get lessons

unless you own land, you're not going to get off public roads. Its not as if you would be taken on the busiest roads at first, theres plenty of quiet roads to start on (as you should know from cycling on them all the time). If you cant afford lessons you could get insured on your own car, and have a driver with you, but if you cant do that either then you'd have to wait.

You'd most likely need your own car anyway and a qualified driver with you even if you did go on a driving training place, and since you'd have to drive there (on public roads), you might as well stay on them.

Well I *think* my dad might have being able to take me in the car, there is loads of quiet roads round here it's just I'm worried what if there is a car behind me and I'm driving slow or stall they'll be going raging off there heads from having to wait untill safe or rather unsafe to overtake.

I'm most likely going to have to learn in Manchester though and you have to learn in the city there which I don't like the thought of, depends how fast my provisional license comes back I guess.

I went with a friend to this old mushroom farm but it's not long enough to change gear you could only get 20mph in it. I stalled about 15 times but I went a second time got the car moving and in a loops!!

If you've got L plates on, its not like people are going to expect you to drive properly... but whats wrong with getting an instructor anyway???? Then they could actually teach you not to stall! Plus, its far easier trying to drive on a proper road than some random mushroom field...

But if you havent even got a provisional license yet then you wont be able to start at all until you get one
