What's in a name....

Post by willyh »

Before I get to deeply involved in another day of delicious idleness I'd like to float a cunning plan that came to me when skimming over the sports pages of the paper (Guardian, of course!).

There on page 12 Harry Pearson bemoaned the fact that, unlike in the glory days of cycling, no British rider has acquired a decent nickname, yet. Just a utterly weak 'Cav', an infantile diminutive. M. Anquetil said about these ' You don't ride the TdF on Inf. Dim.' Or water, for that matter.

This struck a chord with me, as I had made exactly the same point in recent weeks to other Cliftonites on Sat rides. Whereas you can worship (maybe) an Eagle of Toledo, an Angel of the Mountains, a Pedaleur du Charme, and whip up strong feelings about The Badger, il Pirate, The Beast of Eeklo, what can you do with cav???

But I'm sure Cliftonites can rise to the challenge to put this right once for all. I propose a light quick competition to have Cliftonites nominate their choice and decide the CliftonCC top of the pops in the nickname stakes. This could yield valuable publicity and credit for CCC, as, of course, the news hounds will not be slow to pick it up for the benefit of the nation.

My suggestion is 'Needle No More'. The recipient is self-evident, and he has hopes to do very well in the TdF.D

Willy you have too much time on your hands!

Incidentally have you read his book? I have to say I found it to be refreshingly honest and transparent - he tells it as it is.
