Dales Grimpeur - Thank You!!

Post by Anna »

Just wanted to say a very big thank you to all those people who sorted me out yesterday after coming off my bike on the Dales Grimpeur Ride........and also sorry for messing the ride up for everyone. Special thanks to Claire, Cath and Gill!! It was lovely to feel part of a group and that everyone is looking out for each other. And that's the reason I travel down to York on a weekend to ride with the club!

Gill saw me safely on the train to York station where I met my parents. We went straight to York District Hospital A&E as my shoulder and neck were still pretty painful. To cut a long story short, I've fractured my collar bone and had stitches in the back of my thigh after discovering I was bleeding and had lost a chunk of skin. Anyway, I'm all patched up now, just sore and bruised!!.

I think this will put an end to my debut half ironman attempt at the beginning of July - so I'm rather gutted, especially after all the hard training I have done over the last few months since being coached by Brian. But these things happen and I will be back when my bike is fixed and back on the road!

Once again, thank you all so much for your care yesterday and I'm so sorry for disrupting the ride. The first 60miles we did were great and I was thoroughly enjoying it. Hope you all got round the course in good time and enjoyed the rest of your day.

Hope to see you all VERY soon.

Hi Anna,

Sorry to hear you broke your collar bone and that it kills you chances of competing in a half ironman. Right up to that point you seemed to be going really well... I really thought I was in danger of having to complete the 200k with you and Gill.

Just so you know you didnt mess up the ride for everyone. OK, we were a slightly subdued bunch after your fall but we continued as the remaining group and completed the 180k in glorious weather meeting Gill on Lofthouse Moor after she had cycled over from Skipton (probably via Burnley although she still denies it  ).

A couple of things you should perhaps get checked out on your bike (we mentioned them yesterday but I suspect you were not at your receptive best.

Your front rim is broken (guess you know this). Wheel or rim needs replacing. Your rear wheel also has very loose bearings, you should get these tightened. Although the front forks look OK I'd get them and the steerer checked out carefully at a good shop. Looking at the rim they must have taken a big hit. Your brakes also felt a bit soft to me, but I couldnt see what was actually wrong at the roadside.. again may benefit from a service.

Get well soon.

Crikey!!

I hope I haven't jinxed everybody after my accident.

I know exactly how you must feel now Anna having been hit by a car 3 weeks ago but get well soon. Tnankfully in my case nothing was broken other than ny nose and evry other injury was facial but at least it wont keep me off the bike too long. Obvioulsy I dont know the specifics of the accident but I hope it wasnt going down hill. Not beenn the greatest descenderin the world I know how difficult some of the descent can be in the dales.

As regards your bike which I know wont be a priorty at the moment as Alistair says make sure you have it checked. Because of the impact my bike took in the accident no bike shop could guarantee the integrity of the frame and forks anymore which probably means in my case righting the bike off. But again Im speculating on the condition of your bike not know ing the full detail .

Anyway the main thing is to get better first.

Thanks guys. I'm going to take my bike into the local bike shop in Great Ayton, where I bought if from in the first instance. They're really good with all the "mechanics" so I'm sure it will get sorted out fine. Going to get myself a new helmet too, just in case there's any internal damage.

Yeah, Jonathan, I did come off whilst descending!! I'm not the greatest - uphill is more my scene!! Just lost control of my bike. Need more practice at this!! My hands were getting hot and I lost grip on my breaks.

Hope you're on the mend too!!!

Hi Anna,

Just to echo the comments above, don't worry about having spoiled anyone's day, we're all just glad you're in one piece.

Jason.

hi Anna, sorry for the delayed response, but I have been out of the country, i am very sorry to hear of your mishap & hope that you are recovering OK. After all of your efforts to prepare for this event you must be heart broken, I can still remember you riding away from Gil, Claire & I out of westerdale into the head wind, you were going very well then, in preparation for this ride;so keep the chin up I am sure that you will back to the fray soon,
Bernard

Well in a desperate attempt to get ride fit for the Dave Lloyd I rode the Etape du Dales route yesterday. All very nice until about 3pm when the heavens opened and we got 3" of water running down the roads (and pretty much everywhere else too).

The salient point being that there was a team of workmen putting finishing touches to a lovely new surface on the coal road.

Should be much better down as well as up.
