Weekend Roundup
Hope all have been enjoying the fabulous spring weather?
I was out on the Sunday clubrun. Mothers' Day reduced the numbers somewhat, but quality maintained by Nigel and Howard. What have we done to Howard? I'm sure his slip stream used to be much better. He'd done 100miles the day before and so was nicely warmed up.
All three of us fancied the seaside, so we headed out via Settringham Bank then across the Vale of Pickering to Snainton. Troutsdale, Hackness, Scalby and we were soon ensconced with "whopper" fish and chips with 50 miles on the clock.
The route back took us up Flixton Wold then we turned right at Newton in the Wolds into the teeth of the NWerly. Tapped through and off, for an hour and a half, at 14mph, 1 minute each, never any gaps and nobody missing a turn - top stuff.

The 'H' ride was a glorious trip around Levisham (see route plan on other thread). It was warm - bare legs weather - fantastic views and good company. 11 riders left the square. Dave B did his usual cameo and turned off after 10 miles or so. Unfortunately we...... errr........lost another (Paul?) somewhere beyond Coneysthorpe. The remaining 9 stayed together pretty well - although the climbs did sort the men from the boys (and girl!).
Lovely views around Levisham - especially from Newtondale Forest Drive (nasty little descent at the end of this!) First outdoors cafe stop of the year for me in Thornton-le-Dale, then a flat section across the Vale of Malton around to Kirkby Grindalyth and home via Leavening. A storming finish with Chris C on the front pulling 22mph into a stiffening westerly breeze all the way into town from Warthill. 97 miles for me at 18mph average. Thanks to all for a really enjoyable day.
PS I see that Howard - not adequately fatigued by all this - went out for another good ride on Sunday. Not sure I'd have been capable of this. At this rate his performances and physique will soon approximate to a Grand Tour racer!

Hey, thanks for the kind words guys! I read that Johan Bruyneel needs a replacement team member; strangely though he's not currently returning my calls and he seemingly can't even be bothered to reply to my emails! Ah well, one lives in hope!
Here's the log of Sunday's club run:

Another healthy size group in the intermediate class of Clifton left the square and headed to White Horse Bank and to the cafe at Helmsley via Hawnby and returnng through Farlington and Strensall. As said glorious weather and stunning views on the moors. I would even say it was in my top ten days on a bike.
Another 105 mile to add to the total this year. Hopefully will be out on Sunday this W/E for the Fountains Audax

The Intermediate ride on Saturday was wonderful! Thanks Claire for leading it. Lots of conversation, great views, changes of pace and some hills to attack. We (the family) did a nice ride in Dalby forest on Sunday with both Rosemary and Amelia trying out some of the tricks Paul Cranes son Seb showed them! Whilst they were having lunch in the playground, I went for a blast up the blue route and then back via the tail end of the red route. Overall not a bad weekends rides.

weekend rides
Well another good weather weekend, fantastic views around White Horse Bank & Hawnby on Saturday with 17 out and a total of 75 miles plus a few climbs, then I did a ride with Kevin on Sunday with a later start to recover from the previous days exertions, (I had a diiner to attend in the evening), as well as some gardening, but did a 70 miler around Helperby, Dalton, Bagby, Kilburn, Oldstead, Byland with lunch at Coxwold & back via easingwold, Alne etc - the wind was a bit tough at times as well as Kevins steady pace - average 15.4 mph

See you all at the Audax next Sunday !!

A rather late addition to this topic I know, but as all the other groups were discussed, I thought I would let you know, dear readers, that the Kevin group had a thoroughly enjoyable day in the Wolds including an outdoor and warm lunch in Millington. We did split in two after 20 miles or so as we were a little bit too big a group on the narrow roads.
60 miles at a pleasant pace, delightful weather, and time to return for a shower, more tea and an Irish Grand Slam - sorry Elaine.
Once again, our collective thanks to Kevin .Appreciated as always by us all.

Had an enjoyable solo ride round Cockayne on Sunday - the excuse being I've a load of roadraces lined up so won't get another chance for a long ride for a while, wanted to test myself a bit and it was a nice day.
Terrington Bank, Caukleys Bank, Fadmoor (the Cockayne road is closed to through traffic at the moment - the roads slipping away near one of the gates but its ok on a bike and no traffic!) It was tough in the wind all the way up to the head of the valley. Came back through Helmsley, Ampleforth, Yearsley and Farlington. A smidgen under 4 hours door to door - a great morning except for a couple of tossers in cars.
I've a handicap road race with some elderly gentlefolk on Saturday - starting at the back of the field in a group of 10 and as its only 25 miles should feel like the team time trial stage of the tour except with people you don't know which means last Sundays efforts may not have been the best prep physically but great mentally.

I was hoping to win the prize for most meters climbed but reading some of other posts perhaps not.
Rush of blood, good weather forecast and prospect of visiting my favourite Dee valley caused me to wing a late entry for Clwyd Gate Audax - 135km and a claimed 2300m.
I do not doubt it as included Horseshoe and climb from Pensarn (coast) up and then down to Llanfair TH, up and down to LLansarn, up and then up onto Denbigh moors. Could have done without the last up and up and dropped off my little group.
Also combined trip with taking all Mothers in family out for lunch that side of the country so worked out v nicely.
Stayed in the most bizarre B&B in Corwen - converted Court / Police Station / Jail House!
Was thinking of doing a little write up of experience and maybe gauge support for a Clifton weekend away next year?
There were half a dozen "single" cells plus a couple of doubles above old court room!
